Title Nyan Rawng Ai Matsan Ma | The Clever Poor Boy
Description Translation (Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai & Keita Kurabe)
This is a story about a clever but poor boy. Once upon a time, there lived a widow and her child. They were very poor, and managed to survive only through farming. However, the child was handsome and very clever. And when he came of age, he fell in love with the beautiful and intelligent daughter of the king. So he said to his mother, “Mother, I want to marry the king’s daughter.” “Please go and ask the king on my behalf.” His mother said, “My son, we are very poor.” “How could we possibly ask for the king’s daughter?” But the boy replied, “Mother, don’t worry.” “Please go to the king and make the request.” His mother, unable to say anything more, nervously went to the royal palace. When the servant reported, “There is a woman asking for the princess as a bride,” the king agreed to meet with the widow. When she met the king, the boy’s mother said, “Your Majesty, I know this is a most presumptuous request” “but my son has come of age,” “and he has fallen in love with the princess.” “He says he would rather die than not be able to marry her.” “I don’t want to lose my son.” “So I have come to humbly ask for your daughter’s hand.” Then the king said, “What? You have nothing, and you are poor.” “What makes you think you can ask for my daughter?” “However, since you have come all this way to ask” "if you say you want my daughter" “if you can bring a cow as large as a mountain,” “then I suppose I will give you my daughter.” Hearing this, the mother became very sad. There was no such thing as a cow as large as a mountain. But she relayed the king’s words to her son. “He said that if you bring a cow as large as a mountain,” “he will give you his daughter.” “But how could we ever get such an enormous cow?” “So stop thinking about the princess.” She said this sadly to her son. But the boy said, “Mother, there is no need to worry.” “I will bring that cow as large as a mountain tomorrow.” “Please tell the king that.” So the mother did just as her son had said, and went to deliver the message to the king. The next day, the boy took a hammer and an axe and went to the palace. He began making holes in the pillars of the palace gate with the hammer and axe. Servants saw this and said, “Hey! Why are you putting holes in the gate?” The boy replied, “Just as the king told my mother,” “I’m making an entrance big enough for the enormous cow to pass through.” When the king heard of this, he summoned the boy and asked, “Hey, boy. Why are you making holes in my palace?” Then the boy said, “Your Majesty, yesterday, when I sent my mother to ask for the princess,” “you said that if I brought a cow as large as a mountain,” “you would give me your daughter.” “But as it is, the gate is far too small” "for such a cow to enter." “So I am making holes in the gate" "to let the mountain-sized cow through." Hearing this, the king said, “Hmm. This boy is very clever.” “He has the wisdom to deal even with something I thought impossible.” “If I could make him my son-in-law,” “this kingdom would flourish even more.” So the king gave his daughter to the clever boy, and accepted him as his son-in-law. Thus, the boy married the princess he loved, and they lived happily ever after.
