This is a story about a clever but poor boy. Once upon a time, there lived a widow and her child. They were very poor, and managed to survive only through farming. However, the child was handsome and very clever. And when he came of age, he fell in love with the beautiful and intelligent daughter of the king. So he said to his mother, “Mother, I want to marry the king’s daughter.” “Please go and ask the king on my behalf.” His mother said, “My son, we are very poor.” “How could we possibly ask for the king’s daughter?” But the boy replied, “Mother, don’t worry.” “Please go to the king and make the request.” His mother, unable to say anything more, nervously went to the royal palace. When the servant reported, “There is a woman asking for the princess as a bride,” the king agreed to meet with the widow. When she met the king, the boy’s mother said, “Your Majesty, I know this is a most presumptuous request” “but my son has come of age,” “and he has fallen in love with the princess.” “He says he would rather die than not be able to marry her.” “I don’t want to lose my son.” “So I have come to humbly ask for your daughter’s hand.” Then the king said, “What?
