We Kachin people hold the naming ceremony immediately after the birth of a baby, where refreshments such as meat, dried fish, ginger, eggs are served to neighbours. We have been holding the ceremony since the days when our ancestors made offerings to the spirits. We hold the naming ceremony because we don't want the spirits to name the babies before us. It is a culture that has been practiced since the time of our ancestors. We have been practicing it from generation to generation since the time of our ancestors. I would say that it is a mark of our culture that we have to do. The first thing that is served at the naming ceremony is meat. Meat is served to represent all animals that live on the earth. Eggs are also served. Eggs are served to represent birds flying in the sky. Dried fish is also served. Dried fish is served to represent fish and all other creatures that live in the water. Ginger is also served at the ceremony. Ginger is served to represent things in the ground, things that are covered by the soil, such as onions, garlic, ginger, and so on. That's why we serve eggs, meat, ginger, and dried fish in the ceremony. The naming ceremony held immediately following the birth of a baby is part of our culture that has been handed down generation to generation since the days our ancestors made offerings to the spirits.
