Title Nyau hte yu shagan hti shingjawng ai lam | A cat and a rat in a star-counting race
Description Translation (Seng Pan & Keita Kurabe)
I'm going to tell a story about a cat and a rat that had a competition to count the stars. Once upon a time, there were a cat and a rat. They wanted to eat each other. The cat wanted to eat the rat. The rat wanted to eat the cat. So, they had a contest of wits. The cat said to the rat. "Rat, we'll do it this way." "Let's compete counting stars! The one who wins that game eats the one who loses." The rat accepted it. The cat asked the rat. "Who will count the stars first?" The mouse thought, "At night, I will be able to see the stars well enough to count them." So, the rat told the cat to do so. "Cat, I will count at night." The cat accepted it because he was wise. "OK, I will count in the morning." Then the cat slept. The rats began counting the stars at dusk. As it got darker, more stars appeared. The more the rat counted the stars, the more stars there were, so he couldn't count them. The cat slept through the night, and when dawn came, it woke up and told the rat. "You counted the stars all night long, but never finished counting." "I will start counting now." It was at dawn when the cat started counting stars. The rat counted the stars. The brighter it got, the more the stars disappeared. So, the cat could count all the stars. Then the cat said to the rat. "Rat, now I could cound all the stars." "So, as we promised that the one who could count all the stars will eat the one who could not count the stars" "Now I will eat you." The cat caught the rat and ate it. Since then, the old people say, cats have been eating rats.
