Title Hka hkrat si hpang ai lam | The first death by drawing
Description Translation (Mike Tu Awng & Keita Kurabe)
Now, I am goint to tell you about how people started dying from drowning. Long time ago, there was a young man. When he was walking along the river bank, he saw a tree. He saw a tree that was drying and dying out because of wood beetle. He knew it, and he removed that wood beetle from the tree with a dagger. After removing the wood beetle, the tree started growing big beautifully again. Then, one day, that young man went fishing. When he went fishing, he threw the fishing net to the deep river. When he pulled it, it got stuck with something in the water. When he could not pull it out, he tied the rope of the fishing net on the tree he cured before and returned home. The thing he caught with his fishing net happened to be a huge snake-like dragon. He didn't know that and went home. That dragon had a daughter. She transfigured as a human being and came out of the river. Even though she was a dragon, she could transfigure as a human being. She came out of the water and went to the tree. She went to the tree and asked it. "Long ago, you were very sick but now you look very fresh." "How did you become well again?" asked the daughter. And the tree replied, "A young man cured me and I got well again." Then, that dragon girl asked the tree to introduce the young man to her when he came back. When the young man came, the tree, indeed, introduced her to him. When the dragon girl met him, she said, "I heard that you can cure sick people." "How can you cure people?" "My father is sick." "Please cure him." Then that young man also understood the situation because the tree told him. The young man thought that a big dragon must be stuck with the rope. "OK, I will cure him," he said. The first day he removed a bit of the net from the dragon, and the dragon could move a little as it was covered with the net. The young man asked the dragon girl. "How is your father?" The dragon girl replied, "Yes, he is getting better, enough to be able to open his eyes." The following day was also the same. The young man was removing the fishing net from the dragon a little by a little even though he could just pull it out. The dragon was able to move little by little. Like that, the young man was removing the fishing net day by day. The young man asked the dragon girl, "Are your father getting better?" The girl replied "Yes, he can move more than before." They went on like that for seven days and when she said the father was almost recovered, the young man asked. "It's been seven days since I started treating your father." "Your father has almost recovered." "If I cure your father, what will you give me as a gift?" he asked the girl. Then, the girl said to the young man. "I will marry you. Cure my father completely." Then, he removed the fishing net competely. The dragon was able to get out of the net and move. As the father was cured, the dragon girl married the young man as she promised. When they lived together, the dragon girl asked the young man to promise her one thing. "Now that we're married, make one promise to me." "Promise me that from now on you will not catch and eat creatures that live under water" "like shrimps and fish." The dragon girl said to the young man like that. "I won't eat them, I won't fish them, I won't take them," he promised her. The young man had nine other young men who were his neighbours. Those nine young men always invited the young man to go fishing with them. Even if he was invited, he didn't go fishing. No matter how many times he was invited, he never went. He never went fishing because he had promised his wife. But they invited him too much, so one day he went along fishing. But, while he went along fishing, he never caught a fish. He sat on the hill and watched them fish. Then, he went back home. When he returned home, his wife, the dragon girl, asked him. "I can smell the fish on you." But, the young man said. "I haven't gone anywhere," he lied. Then, one day, the nine young men invited the young man again. "Let's go fishing," they invited him but he did not follow them. But again they invited him, so he went along. He went along and that day he fished with them. He fished together but did not take any fish. The nice neighbors said, "This young man does not eat fish. When we give him fish, he refuses. So, we'll put a fish in his basket." Then, they put a stone loach in his basket. When they put it, the young man was not aware of it. He didn't know that they put a fish in his basket and he went back. When he arrived home, his wife said. "I told you not to go fishing, but you did." "Those in the water are my cousins." Then the young man replied. "I do not bring anything, I do not eat anything." But when she opened the basket, she found a stone loach in it. "This is my fourth cousin brother, Stone loach." "I told you many times not to go but you did not listen to me." After saying that, she turned to a dragon and went into the water. When she had gone, the young man was very sad. He went to sit where his wife went into the water and cried so hard for losing his wife. He cried every day. Then, the father dragon asked his daughter to go back to her husband. "Don't worry about it. Go back to your husband." But the dragon girl said, "I will not go back to him because he does not listen to my words." He came to the river and sat on a stone on the riverbank and cried because he was so sad. Then, one day, the dragon girl spread her hair at the spot where her husband usually sat down. Once he came and sat down on her hair, she dragged him into the river. Her husband was drown to death. From that day on, we, human beings, started to drown to death in the water. Thank you.

Collection title Animated videos of Kachin folktales
Description These materials were produced by Keita Kurabe and members of the Kachin community as part of a community-based collaborative documentation and revitalization project in northern Myanmar. Narration was contributed by Sumlut Gun Mai, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Gumtung Lu Awng, and Jumhpawk Nyein Chan Thu. Illustrations were contributed by Kahtantu Htoi Awng, Shatum Naw Ra, Sumlut Mun San Pan, and Ikumi Wakana.
