Description Translation (Htoi San)
This story concerns a farmer's family with a father and three sons. The farmer's family lived in a village and worked farming as their livelihood. When they finished farming, they reared a nanny goat. For the first time, the father asked Ma Gam (the eldest son) to rear it. When Ma Gam took care of the nanny goat, he asked her, "Nanny goat, are you full?" She replied, "Yes. I am full." When they reached home, the father asked the son, "My son, did you fully feed the nanny goat?" The son answered, "Yes, father, I fed her full." Then the owner brought the nanny goat and asked her again. "E Nanny goat, did your owner fully feed you?" The goat answered, "No, he did not. He tied me to a dry place." When the father heard about this, he was furious and chased his eldest son out. The next day, the father told Ma Naw (the second son) to do the same thing as Ma Gam. When he asked Ma Naw, his second son answered like his brother. Then he wondered about Nanny goat, and she replied that she ate dry things. Therefore the father blamed Ma Naw as he did not even feed only one goat fully, and he drove him out too. After that, the father sent Ma La (the third son) to watch over that nanny goat. It happened the same to Ma La, so the father drove away him too. After chasing away all his three sons, the father was left alone, so he kept the nanny goat. When they went home at night, he asked the goat, "Did you feel full today?" The nanny goat answered, "You just gave me dry stuff so I was not full." Father regretted, "The nanny is lying all the time, and I wrongly chased all my sons out. I was disappointed." He was looking for his sons, but he could not find them. Ma Gam went to and stayed with a farmer who worked on a farm since his father had chased him out. He worked as a worker there. Ma Naw labored and stayed with a carpenter who made houses with wood. Ma La stayed at a tailoring place where people lived for sewing. They all learned the skills, and it had been a year already. Ma La requested the tailor, "I want to go home. I want to meet with my father very much. Therefore please let me go and meet my father." Ma Gam also asked the farmer to go back home. The farmer told him, "If you want to go home, it is okay." The host gave him a present, "Take this magic table with you. It is the table that you can get whatever you ask from it." So Ma Gam took it and started his journey. On his way, he rested in a restaurant as it was getting dark and stayed there to sleep that night. When he felt hungry, he beat the table in front of the host. "I want to eat a lot." The table gave many kinds of food, and the host saw this. That night, the shop owner changed that table while he was sleeping. Ma Gam reached home the following morning. He told his father, "Father, this table can give you whatever you request. I came here to show you this." His father replied, "My son, if it is like that, I will invite my friends. You show what it can do." Then the father called many of his friends. When many of his friends arrived, Ma Gam hit the table, but nothing came out from the table. He was so ashamed as nothing came from his table and left his home. After Ma Gam left home, Ma Naw went back home. He got a horse from the carpenter. The carpenter told him, "That horse can give you whatever you ask from its mouth." He accepted it, "Alright." Then he rode on it and went back home. He also rested like his brother Ma Gam and told the horse, "E horse, I am hungry so give me some money." He took out the money from the horse's mouth, and the host saw that too. The host planned to steal that horse. When Ma Naw fell asleep, the host came out and stole that horse. Then the host changed the horse. When Ma Naw got home, he said that this horse could give you whatever you asked for. Father told him, "You try asking from it as you said you can ask everything." He requested to give gold but nothing came out. Ma Naw was shamefaced and left home. At last, Ma La went back home. Ma La lived his life weaving, and the weaver gave him a stick. That stick was made with spirit words that people created. He heard what had happened to his two elder brothers, so he intentionally brought that stick and put it in his bag. At night time, the host thought, "This man's bag is so big. There may be gold stones in it." Then he opened Ma La's bag, and the stick jumped out, hitting the shop owner heavily. The shop owner asked for help, "Please don't beat me. Please help me! Help me!" The host questioned Ma La, "Why did you beat me? Don't hit me!" Then Ma La took back the stick from hitting the shop owner and put it in his bag. After that, he went home. He told his father, "Father, come, and look at the stick I brought today." "This stick can do whatever you want. I will present what it can do. Have a look at it." Father believed him. Then he told his father, "Father, you and I, eldest brother and elder brother, the man from the place where we rested, took our things, so it happened like that." "I took back those things from him." He brought back Ma Gam's table and Ma Naw's horse from that shop owner. He called his brothers back, and they lived richly and happily in their kingdom.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,426 translations are currently available (October 19, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
