Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, there was a couple in a village. They were poor. They did farming to make a living. One day, the wife told her husband, "My husband, it's time to harvest the crops. Go harvest the crops." The stupid husband said, "How much do I harvest?" She said, "Just enough amount for two of us. It will be enough if you harvest as big as my buttock." He really measured the size of his wife's buttocks and harvested only a small amount. After he had harvested, she asked him, "Have you done?" He said, "Yes." When she went to check how much he harvested, she saw he harvested just a few crops. She scolded him, "Why did you harvest only that much? Why are you so stupid?" Then she had to harvest the crops by herself. Later, she told her husband, "Now is the time to burn our field. You do it." He asked her, "How should I do?" She said, "Burn from the start to the end of the field." But he misunderstood what she said. He thought his wife said, "Burn from head to toe." (In the Jinghpaw language, the words 'baw' and 'nmai' can be interpreted differently in a different context.) So, he took the match and went to the field. And he burned his head. When he came back home, she asked him, "What happened to you?" He said, "You told me to burn from head to toe. So I did." She said, "What a stupid man you are!" She continued saying, "Let it be. Go and build a hut tomorrow." He asked her, "How big?" She said, "Just for two of us. It will be okay although it is as small as a crab shell." He went to the river and really looked for the crab shell. When he found it, he went to the field. He put three small sticks into the ground and set the shell on top of them. Then he went back home and said to his wife, "I have done." She asked him to make sure, "Have you built a hut?" He said, "Yes." She saw that there was just a shell. She was disappointed and said, "Why are you so stupid? You are brainless." She was angry at him. Later, she set a trap in their field. An animal was caught in the trap. She killed it and took the meat home. But she couldn't carry it all. So she left some meat and hung it on the branch. She told her husband, "I have got some meat, but I left some at our field because I can't carry it all. Go take it all home. Go quickly." He took a strap to hang the meat and went there. He didn't see the meat. He tied the strap to the tree and tried to carry it. He was struggling to carry it the whole morning. His wife thought, "Why is he taking so long?" She followed him and saw that he was trying to carry the tree. She shouted, "Who told you to carry that tree?" He said, "You told me to carry it." She pointed at the meat and shouted, "This meat! This! I told you to take this meat." The next day, the wife told her husband, "Go and check the trap today. Let's see what we will get." When he checked the trap, he saw a deer in it. It was a big deer. He untied the trap and said to the deer, "Go to my wife." He said like that to the deer. But the deer couldn't understand what he said. Of course, it didn't go to his wife. When he arrived home later, he said, "We have got a big deer in the trap." The wife asked him, "Where is that deer?" He told her, "I let it go to you. I told it to go to you." She was disappointed and said, "What a naive man you are!" The next morning, she told him to check the trap again. She told him, "Go and check the trap tomorrow." There was a cock trapped in the trap. When he saw it, he thought, "This cock looks like one of the villagers' cock." And he freed the cock. When he arrived home, his wife asked him, "Is there anything in the trap?" He said, "There is a cock. But it looks like one of the villagers' cock. So I freed it." She was speechless. She scolded him, "Why are you so stupid? You have to bring whatever you get. Whatever we get, tie it and bring it home." They set the trap on the way to their field. It was a human this time. A man in red clothes was walking on the way they set the trap. He got caught in the trap. The husband saw the man trapped there. The man told him, "Don't tie me, please." He said, "I have to. My wife told me to tie anything that gets caught in the trap and bring it home." He tied the man tightly and brought him home. When his wife saw him, she asked him, "What do you bring home? What is that?" He said, "You told me to tie anything we got and bring it home." She saw him carrying a man. She was shocked and said, "I shouldn't live with you forever. You are just brainless." She left him because he was so stupid.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,497 translations are currently available (January 30, 2025). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
