Title Jahkrai ma hte hkaike (The poor girl and the parrot) with English translation
Description Translation (Htoi San)
Once upon a time, there were a widower and his child in a village. The child was a girl. The mother died in labour. Since he became a widower for a long time, he needed a life partner. He married a woman. They had got a daughter too. The stepmother hated her stepdaughter. She bullied her stepdaughter a lot. She didn't feed her enough too. One day, the king announced to the whole country that he would get married. The king ordered every beautiful girl in the country to come to the palace. For example, every pretty girl from each state or town had to go to the palace. Every girl happily went to the palace. Then, the stepmother also prepared her daughter beautifully and sent her there. There was a parrot in the palace. She didn't want her stepdaughter to go there, so she threw a lot of sesame seeds on the ground. She ordered her, "Pick every single seed! You can go to the palace when you finish picking every single sesame seed!" Then, she accompanied her daughter and sent her to the palace. The poor girl was picking the seeds alone. Her friends called her, "Hey, let's go to the palace." She said, "My stepmother and stepsister already went there. I can't go now. I needed to pick the sesame seeds. My mom told me to pick up all the seeds without any soil. Go there first." Every girl from the village went to the palace. The poor girl was picking the seeds up while crying sadly. There were a lot of beautiful girls who came to the palace. However, the parrot didn't make any sound when the girls walked past it. It was just looking at everyone in silence. It was just watching everyone. The officials were thinking, "The parrot doesn't say a word." Meanwhile, the poor girl was picking the sesame seeds sadly. But she couldn't finish picking all. She was depressed and cried sadly. At that time, a group of parrots flew towards her and helped her pick the sesame seeds. They had finished in a short time. Then, she could go to the palace. But she didn't have any beautiful clothes to wear. She just wore simple clothes and went to the palace. When she arrived there, the parrot said, "Welcome. Come in, come in." The king's officials were pleased and welcomed her, "She will be the future queen." The servants dressed her up and hid her. There were many beautiful girls who arrived at the palace first. The parrot didn't choose any of them. The king didn't like anyone too. When the poor girl showed up, the parrot said, "Yes, that's her. She will be the king's consort." We have learnt a lesson that we should never treat any poor or orphans irresponsibly. We should treat everyone in the same way. Thank you very much.
