Many years ago, the egret and the crow were best friends. They were together and maintained their friendship. One day, they decided to compete against each other over who could have more babies. The crow was the one who said to compete against each other. It thought, "I can eat more than the egret. I eat everything. I believe I can have more babies than her." The egret agreed to compete. They decided to compete over who could have the babies more. When the time was close for them to give birth, the crow told the egret, "I will build my nest on the tree. You build your nest on the ground." The crow could eat food from the tree, on the ground and in the water, while the egret could eat only fish in the water. The egret had to suffer a lot. The crow was a bit arrogant because it could fly and could find food easily in the sky or on the ground. It was wicked too. It told the egret, "Let's see who will give birth to more babies! Let's see who will have a bigger family more and more." When it was time for them to lay eggs, the crow said, "I will build my nest on the tree. You build your nest on the ground." Then the egret laid its eggs on the ground. The egret built its nest on the ground and the crow built its nest on the tree. And they laid their eggs in their nests. Unexpectedly, the crow couldn't lay lots of eggs. But the egret had lots of eggs. The crow was jealous because the egret laid more eggs than her. So it stole some of the egret's eggs and put them in its nest. And it brooded the eggs until they hatched. The crow had more babies than the egret. Then the egret felt suspicious of the crow. It thought, "How could the crow have more babies than I do? I laid eggs a lot more than she did, but she has more babies. Maybe she stole my eggs. Something is suspicious." It felt suspicious and accused the crow. The crow denied the fact that it stole the egret's eggs. Finally, the crow said, "We need someone to decide our matter. We can't just keep arguing." The crow had lots of acquaintances, so it was arrogant. It told the egret, "We must not keep arguing. We need some judges to decide our matter. You can call your relatives or acquaintances. I will call mine. Let them decide." The crow invited its relatives to decide their problem. It invited lots of birds that could fly in the sky. Meanwhile, the egret didn't have any relatives or acquaintances. It didn't have anyone to invite, so it was helpless. At last, the egret invited the owl to be the judge from its side. It explained, "The crow stole my eggs and hatched them. We are having a problem with her eggs and mine. To decide our problem fairly, we need judges. So, please be my judge." The egret invited the owl. On that day, there were many birds from the crow's side. The birds were talking a lot about the issue. They favored the crow and said that it was right. At that time, the owl didn't say a word and just sat there. When it sat, its head was down. Then the egret said to the owl, "My brother, I trust you and invited you to be the judge for me. Why are you just sitting down there without saying a word?" The owl replied to it, "The black colour bird will give birth to black babies. The white will have the white." Then every bird looked at the baby birds of the crow. Most of the babies were white. There were only four black baby crows. There were many white baby birds, so the birds that the crow invited said, "Right. The black will have only black babies. The white bird will give birth to white baby birds." In the end, the egret could get all of her babies back from the crow. The owl was wise. It didn't say much. It just said reasonable facts wisely. It could solve the problem in a wise way. Therefore, the egret could get her babies back thanks to the owl.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
