Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story's title is 'an orphan boy and a group of boys.' Once upon a time, there was an old grandmother and her grandson, who was an orphan. There was a house where a group of boys lived in the same village. The grandmother and her grandson were penniless. The villagers excluded them from the social circle because they were so poor. Therefore, they lived in a small house on the outskirts. One day, a group of boys told a poor orphan, "We have volunteer work tomorrow. Everyone has to come and help." However, the orphan boy couldn't go there. If he went there, he couldn't work for his family. So he told them, "I think I won't be able to go there and help. However, I will give pork thigh meat for all volunteers to eat from our share." Every villager worked as volunteers on that day. Everyone helped and worked as volunteers. Only the orphan boy was not there. He gave pork thigh meat to everyone to eat. But the boys didn't cook the meat for volunteers. They were playing with it by tossing it. They asked everyone to work without treating them to a meal. They didn't cook the meat for the villagers, although it was getting dark. The brothers were arrogant because they were all boys and strong. They often bullied weak people. They always bullied the orphan boy. They intentionally didn't cook the pork for the villagers. In the evening, the villagers asked them, "What are you going to do with this pig thigh meat?" The boys took it and gave it back to the orphan boy. However, the pork was not in the state of being able to eat because they were throwing and tossing it everywhere. So, the meat was covered with sand. The boys told the orphan boy, "Here it is! Your pig thigh couldn't work! So you take it back now!" They just threw it to him. He and his grandmother were embarrassed because the boys were treating them that way. The next day, the boys came to him and said, "Let's go hunting tomorrow." He couldn't say no, so he agreed to go hunting with them. The following day, all of them went into the forest to hunt. When they arrived at a tree in the forest, the boys told the orphan, "You set your trap at the bottom of the tree. We will set our trap on the tree." Then they climbed the tree and set their trap on it. The orphan also set his trap on the ground. When it was getting dark, they went back to their homes. The next morning, the boys went to the forest to check their traps without the orphan boy to see if any animals got trapped. When they were there, they saw a deer trapped in the orphan boy's trap. There was a great hornbill in their trap on the tree. Since they got there first, they took the orphan boy's deer and changed it with their great hornbill. They took the deer and hung it in their trap on the tree. Soon, the orphan boy knew that they didn't call him and went into the forest by themselves. So he quickly went there too. He saw that the great hornbill was in his trap and the deer was in the boys' trap on the tree. He told them, "There is no way a deer would be trapped on the tree! It is definitely trapped in my trap. Give it back to me." Then the boys refused to give it back and said, "No! As you can see, we should take what we have in our traps." He told them, "No, I don't agree. If you keep denying the truth, we should ask a righteous and truthful judge to handle this issue." They agreed to have it handled by the judge. On his way back, he met a rabbit and asked for help. He told it, "We have got this issue. Can you please be a judge for us?" The rabbit agreed to be the judge. Then the boys said, "Let's meet there tomorrow morning at 9 a.m." The next morning, they all gathered there. The orphan boy and the boys were already there at the place where they set the traps. But the rabbit was not there yet. They had to keep waiting for it. The rabbit arrived there many hours later. Then the boys shouted at it, "We told you to meet here at that time! Why are you so late?" The rabbit calmly said, "I tried to be here at the appointed time. I saw something on my way here. I saw the sand was burning, so I carried water with a basket woven with wide interstices to put out the fire." The boys and the orphan were thinking of the scenario. The boys said, "No way! It is impossible." They said, "There is no way you put out the fire by carrying water with the basket! And it is impossible that the sand was burning." The rabbit said, "Yes, it is impossible. As it is impossible, a deer trapped on the tree is also impossible. You are right! There is no way to put out the fire by carrying water with the basket. There is no way that the great hornbill was trapped on the ground too." The rabbit made a truthful judgement for them. It wisely handled the issue.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
