Title Nat shayi sha hte jahkrai ma (The spirit girl and the orphan) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, there was an orphan boy at a rich's house. The rich man's children were bullying that orphan boy. They let him look after sheep, goats and cows. The orphan boy had to sleep in a shed too. They bullied him a lot. While the orphan boy was looking after the animals, the rich children came there and beat him with a stick. They often tormented him like that. Then, the father of the fairies from the sky looked at them. "Look at that! The orphan has been bullied. Go and save him!" he said to his daughters. He said to his eldest daughter, "My daughter, you go there. Save him." His daughter said, "No, I don't want to! It's a too complicated place. I don't want to go to the earth." Then, the father said to his second daughter, "Then, you go there." His second daughter said, "No, I don't want to!" He said to his third daughter, "My daughter, you go there then." But his daughter said the same as her sisters, "No, I don't!" He said to his fourth, fifth, sixth daughters to go there. Everyone said no. Then the seventh youngest and weakest daughter said, "I will go there, father." The seventh daughter said that she would go there. She went to the earth. While the boy was looking after the cows, the fairy showed up beside him. The fairy was sparkling and shining so brightly. The boy couldn't even look at her because of the shining bright light. The fairy stood near him and said, "Don't be afraid. I am coming here to save you." But, the boy was so scared and ran away from there. Then, the fairy made the way dark while the boy was running. So, she could follow him. When the fairy was near him, he ran away again. Then, the fairy made the boy pierced by a spike. The boy couldn't run anymore. So, the fairy could follow him again. And she said, "My father ordered me to save you. The rich children usually bully you, right? I'm just coming here to save you. So, don't be afraid of me. Show me the house of those rich children." The orphan boy said, "A beautiful fairy like you shouldn't follow me. I sleep with animals." She said, "It's okay. No matter where you sleep or where you go, I will follow you. Just take me with you." So, the boy took her to the cowshed. He said to the fairy, "I sleep here." She saw that the boy ate a meal by putting it on the dog's plate. Since the beautiful fairy stays in a shed, it was shining brightly. Then, the rich man saw the shining light coming out from the shed. He said, "There is a pretty girl in a shed. Come into the house, please. Come." He invited the fairy. The fairy said, "It's okay. I will stay only here." The rich family treated her to delicious meals then. They treated the fairy with nice plates and bowls, but they gave the food to the orphan boy by putting it on the dog's dish. They treated the girl nicely, but they mistreated the orphan boy. The fairy gave her food to the orphan and let him eat delicious meals. And she took his food and ate it. After eating that, they slept there. The next morning, the rich family came to the shed to see the fairy. The fairy said to the rich man, "Can you give the orphan boy to me?" The rich man said, "Why should I? I can't!" She said, "Then, how much should I give?" The rich man said, "I look after him since his mother died. I even held a funeral of his mother by costing much money. So, he needs to do work by staying at my house. He can't leave my house!" Then, the fairy said, "I will give the debt instead of him. Just give me the list of how much I should pay back." The rich man started cataloguing the list of clothes, slippers and money that the boy used. And he gave it to the girl. She said, "I will give you tonight. Tomorrow, I will take the orphan boy with me." Then, they agreed that. That night, she went up to the sky and brought her sisters down to the earth. She told her sisters what she needed to pay the debt of the boy. So, each of her sisters brought materials needed for sewing clothe and handloom weaving materials. The whole night, they were sewing clothes, blankets and slippers. They got lots the next morning. When it was getting bright, her sisters went up to the sky. The fairy gave all those clothes, blankets and slippers to the rich man. And she took the orphan boy out from that house. She asked him, "Where was your house where you and your mother lived before?" He answered, "It was behind the village." Then, they went there. When they arrived there, the fairy said to the boy, "Close your eyes for a moment?" She created a nice house and a beautiful compound with her power. And she said, "This is the house where we are going to live from now on." They lived together there and got one child. After having one child, the fairy said to her husband, "Now, our child is growing up gradually. And you have got a friend too. Live together with your son. I will have to go back to my father." When she said like that, her son didn't want her to leave him. Since her son acted like that, she was sad. Then, she tore some part of her longgyi and made a necklace with that. And she made her son wear that. She said, "Don't cry." And she went back to her place. After some years later, the child of the fairy and the orphan boy became a grown-up man. The orphan was getting older too. His son asked him before he died, "Who is my mom?" Whenever his son asked him about that, he always said, "Your mom is dead." He never told his son about who his mother was. But his son insisted on asking him about that. So, he said, "If you want to know who your mother is, go and ask the rich man. He knows your mother." Then, his son went to the rich man and asked, "Who is my mother? Can you tell me, please?" The rich man said, "You really want to know about your mom? Then, go over those four or five mountains which are really high and far. There is a lake after those mountains. There will be seven fairies who will come to take a shower in that lake. The youngest is your mother." The rich man continued, "Can you go there? It's really far away from here." He said, "I will definitely go there." He brought the weapons such as spear, arrow and bow and went to the lake where his mother usually came to take a shower. Some days later, he arrived there. He was hiding in the bush and was waiting for his mother. After some time, the fairies were there and took a shower. And they were about to fly back to their place. They were changing their fairy costumes. At that time, he suddenly grabbed the youngest fairy and held tight. He said, "Mom, Mom, Mom." He held her tight. The fairy was embarrassed and said angrily, "How could this dirty human call me 'Mom'! Where are you from?" Then, the boy showed her the necklace which was made by her longgyi. And he said, "This is the necklace you gave me, mom." The fairy remembered when she saw that necklace. She knew that her son came here because the rich man told him about it. She said, "From now on, don't come to me. Okay? I am a fairy. You can't come to me. I will give you these sections of bamboo. One is for your grandpa (the rich man), one is for you, and throw these two in the forest. Don't ever look back." Then, the boy listened to his mother and threw two sections of bamboo in the forest. He didn't look back and kept walking straight. After walking for a while, he looked back the way. He saw only bushes, not a way to the lake. When he got back home, he gave one to his grandpa. His grandpa wondered what was inside the bamboo. He was curious. So, he cut the bamboo. Suddenly, a fire exploded. He was dead right there. The boy took one bamboo section and did exactly as his mother said. So, he spread the bamboo seeds in his house compound. Then, there were a lot of animals, vegetables and plants all over his compound. Since then, the boy became rich with the help of his mother.
