Description Translation (Gun Mai)
Long long ago, there was a very rich king who had seven children. All the children were boys. When all the boys were staying, they went to a forest. They went to a snow mountain and when they got there, the queen went out to get sunlight. At that time, the queen was bled from her nose and dropped on the snow so the snow was mixed with the queen's blood and it became like the blood of a bird. So, the queen said to herself that "Such blood! if a girl is wanted, I will drive out all the sons from the palace." The people of the queen heard what the queen just said to herself. Then, they returned home. Later, the queen got pregnant again and a very beautiful girl was born. When the girl was born, the people who followed the queen to the snow mountain said to the queen that "Queen, you have said that if you have a girl, you will drive out your seven sons. So, you have to drive out the sons." The queen was very unhappy but she had to send all her seven sons to a jungle, which was very far from the palace. The girl was also living in the palace happily and was growing day by day. The girl's brothers, the boys who were sent in the jungle were not met by their parents. But, there was an old man. "Why you boys are here?" the old man asked. "We were sent here because my mother spoke mistakenly. Please let us stay here," the boys answered. The old man also said that "Yes, you can stay here and you can stay in this compound. You can also eat all the fruits in this garden but you are not allowed to touch Daw Ngu bud that is located in the late." The youngest brother among the seven brothers was overly active. Then, the youngest brother broke the seven Daw Ngu buds. Because the youngest brother broke the Daw Ngu buds that they were not allowed to even touch, all the brothers became birds. When all the boys became the birds, the girl was also growing happily in the palace as she was the youngest child. There were a lot of rooms, seven rooms in the palace. So, the girl asked her mother that "Mother, these seven rooms are whose rooms?" "These seven rooms are the rooms of your seven brothers. Because I mistakenly said to myself to drive out them if I have a beautiful daughter, I sent them to the jungle." The girl also felt that her brothers went sent to the jungle because of her. So, she asked the people who knew where her brothers were sent. The people also told her the place where her brothers were sent. So, the girl went to the jungle. When she got there, she did not see her brothers and she only saw the old man. So, the girl asked the old man that "Grandpa, I was told that my seven elder brothers are here." "Your elder brothers are no longer here. If you want to meet with your elder brothers, will you do as I said?" the old man said. The girl said OK so she was given all the garden tools. Then the old man said to the girl that "You clear this garden and grow cotton trees. Then, take cotton from the tree and weave the cotton to get seven shirts for your elder brothers. When you finish the seven shirts, shake the shirt one by one and call the name of your elder brother one by one. So, they will come back one by one. But, when you are doing all these things, you must not talk to anyone. No matter whoever talks whatever to you, you must not talk with anyone." So, the girl went to the garden and started a cotton farm. When the cotton trees were grown, she took out the cotton from the cotton seeds. At that time, a king from another country came to her. The king was hunting in the jungle and saw the girl. The girl was very beautiful so the king liked her. But, the girl talked to no one. So, he ordered his people that "Help the girl to pluck grasses." Even though the king talked to the girl, the girl did not talk but the king very loved her. The king also came again the next day and asked his people to help to pluck grasses but the girl even chased them with her sword. It meant that they were not allowed to help her. She did it by herself. Then, she took the cotton from the cotton trees. Then, she also started weaving and made shirts one by one for her elder brothers. At that time, since the king loved the girl very much and the girl also talked to no one, the king took all the stuff of the girl and brought them to the palace. Then, the king and the girl lived together and the girl got pregnant. The king had a legally wedded first wife and she was very bad. The girl who weaved the cotton continued to weave the shirts for her elder brother and she talked to no one no matter whoever talked to her. When it was about to finish weaving, she gave birth to a baby. At that time, the king was going on a journey. The girl gave birth to the baby herself and when she was taking care of her baby, the first wife of the king took the girl's baby. Then, the king's first wife killed the baby of the girl and a dog was replaced. Even though the girl saw everything that the first wife did, she did not talk anything as she was not allowed to talk. The girl continued to do what she needed to do and finished weaving the shirts. Then, the girl went back to the jungle where her elder brother lived and shook the shirt, and called her elder brothers one by one. So, each her elder brother returned to her and she helped them to wear the shirt one by one. When all her elder brothers were backed, the girl said that "I am your younger sister. You had to stay in the jungle and became birds because of me. So, I tried hard to bring you back and see you." Then, the girl went again to the palace. At that time, the king also had already returned palace. The first wife of the king said to the king that "King, see what the girl who you love very much gave birth. She gave birth a little dog, not a human." The king was also suspicious of his first wife because he knew that the first wife was bad. He also thought that there would be something as the girl also did not talk to anyone. Then, the girl asked all her seven elder brothers to sit and said to the king that "These are my elder brothers. As long as I don't meet them, I was not allowed to talk so I did not talk. But, your first wife killed my human baby and repalced the baby with the dog." Then, the first wife of the king was shied and when she ran away, a landslide hit her and filled her to death. The meaning of the story is that the girl met again with her elder brothers because she was patient and tolerant.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
