Title Kugyin Hpe Hkye La Ai La A Lam | The Man Who Helped the Ants
Description Translation (Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai & Keita Kurabe)
Now I will tell you a folktale about a man who helped ants. Long ago, in a village, there lived a man suffering from a serious illness. His sickness did not get better, and the man wanted to know why. So he went to visit a fortune teller. After casting the fortune, the fortune teller said, “Hm, your illness will not be cured.” “In five days, you will die.” The man was filled with sorrow. “If I am to die,” “at least I will walk in my garden one last time.” Gathering all his strength, he went out to the garden. When he reached the garden, he saw a group of ants trying to cross from a flooded place to dry land, but unable to cross no matter what. The man brought a wooden stick, and made a bridge so the ants could cross to land. Then he returned home, and quietly waited for the day of his death. And so, he waited, wondering, “Will I die on the fifth day?” but the man did not die. Even on the sixth day, his life did not end. Puzzled, the man went again to see the fortune teller. “Hm, you were indeed destined to die,” “but you saved the lives of many ants,” “so your lifespan has been extended.” The man learned that whether it is people or tiny ants, it is important to help those in need. Rejoicing in his heart, the man returned home.
