Extra information recorded
Was only able to record the first three hours of this ceremony due to technical problems with the recording machine. Had to stop at 1:30am. Started about 10 minutes from the beginning as I got RO to check if it was okay for me to record.
Different dances that the women did during the night:
- straight legs limply jumping forward
- hands behind head
- with a karlangu in front (Maisie Napurrurla did this a lot)
- in a line from south to north
- in two lines one facing south and one facing north dancing towards each other
At the end of each phrase of singing there was a bird call like sound depending on the relationship of particular woman to the initiand.
There were nine initiands but only five or six firesticks.
At the end the women formed a gap in the middle of the group. Harry Nelson walked through it towards to the west where the boys were. The boys came back through eastwards with the juka. They sat down amongst the singers for a few seconds and then came back again and stood amongst the women. The women went up to them and touched them (some women throwing soil and ritual fluff). Then all the women went home.
