Once upon a time, there were an older man and an orphan boy in a village. The orphan worked hard and saved all his money. Many years later, he got rich. One day, he thought to visit other places for about two or three months. He considered whom to keep his money. He decided to give his money to an older man to keep for a while when he was away. Then, they met under a tree which was outside the village. The orphan boy said, "Grandpa, since you always live in your house without going outside, please keep my money because I want to visit other places for a while." They made the deal under the tree. After that, the orphan visited other villages. It took three months. When he came back to his village, he asked the older man to give his money back. At that time, the old man acted like the boy had never given the money to him. He denied, "What are you talking about? I did not keep anyone's money. You might give your money to another man. Not me! You are mistaken." No matter how many times the boy asked him to give the money back, he kept denying that he didn't keep his money. The boy did not know what to do. So, the boy told him, "Let's go to a judge." The old man agreed to go to the judge to solve the problem. He thought, "I will keep saying that I didn't keep the boy's money." They went to a wise man from their neighbour village. When they arrived there, the boy told everything about them to the judge. The judge said, "Where did you make the deal?" The orphan answered, "Under the tree. I gave him my money to keep for a while under the tree." But the old man kept denying that he didn't receive any money from the boy. The judge said, "Okay. If you really make the deal under the tree, call the tree to come here." The old man thought, "The tree can't move at all. I just need to deny. Then, I can get all his money." The orphan said, "Judge! How can I call the tree to come here? The tree is not alive. It can't move a bit." The judge told him, "Don't worry! Tell the tree that I called it, then the tree will speak and come with you." After a few minutes the boy went to call the tree, the judge suddenly asked the old man, "Hey old man! Did the boy reach there?" The old man answered, "He can't reach there right now because it is very far from here." The judge knew that the old man was lying. So, he told the old man, "You said the boy didn't give you any money. Then, how do you know that the tree is far from here? You are admitting yourself. The tree is your witness. It's very sure that you accepted the money from the boy." At that time, the orphan boy came back and said, "I call the tree to come here." The judge said, "The tree has already arrived here and proved that the old man took the money from you. You will get back your money. Isn't it, the old man?" The old man agreed. Finally, the orphan got his money back.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
