Once upon a time, there was a boy in a village. He lived with his father. One day, the father was sick. And he passed away. When his father died, he was still young and did not know how to earn money. One pleasant night, he dreamt of his father. His father said, "My son! I know that you will be in trouble when I left you alone. So, go to the public rest house at the outskirts of the village and search for crabs there. Sell those crabs and make money for your living." He did as his father told him to do. He took a hoe and went to search the crabs. He had found a crab when he dug the ground. He sold the crab to the rich families. He made a living by selling the crabs. It was his daily routine. One day, he met a girl from a rich family on his way to sell the crabs. The girl asked him, "Where did you come from? What do you do?" He answered, "I am a crab seller. I am going to sell the crabs to the rich families." The girl told him, "Sell the crabs to me. Don't go anywhere to sell these. Come and sell the crabs to me tomorrow too." She felt pity for him. So, she bought the crabs from him everyday. As she saw him every day, she fell for him. The boy knew that she loved him. The girl told her father about her feelings to the boy, "I love the boy who sells the crabs. I want to marry him." Then, her parents angrily said, "If you marry him, we will abandon you!" But, she did not care. She decided to go to the poor boy. When she reached the boy's house, she told him, "I want to be with you for the rest of my life." The boy didn't accept her and said, "You do not deserve the poor life. I am just a boy who doesn't have a proper job. And I sell only crabs for my living. Just go back to your family." She was upset and said, "Don't drive me away. I go against my parents' will. They have already abandoned me, so I don't have anywhere to go back. But if you want me to go away, I will." He felt sorry and let her stay with him. When the boy went out to search the crabs, she cooked a delicious meal for him everyday. After a few years, they could save some amount of money. Then, the girl told her husband, "I think we can stop searching for the crabs. We have saved some money too. Let's do another job." But, her husband was still going to search for the crabs. One day, they ran out of firewood. So, he had to go collect some woods instead of searching for crabs. The wife wanted to know how her husband looked for the crabs. She went to the place where her husband usually found the crabs. When she arrived there, she saw many holes. She also dug there to find some crabs. She just destroyed the place. The next day, the husband went there to search for the crabs. He saw that someone had destroyed the ground. And he saw a bright and beautiful crab shell on the ground. He picked it up and returned home. He was very angry because he could not find any crabs. When he arrived home, he threw the shell onto the ground. He thought it was just useless. He didn't talk to his wife as well. At night, the wife counted the money which they got by selling the crabs. She considered, "What kind of business can we do with this amount of money." While she was counting the money, she accidentally dropped a coin to the ground through the bamboo floor. But she decided to pick it the next day because it was already night time. The next morning, she looked for the coin. She found that the coin was in the crab shell which her husband threw. Surprisingly, there were many coins in the shell. She vividly remembered that she dropped only one coin. She was surprised and very happy. She quickly went to her husband and told him about it. They couldn't believe themselves. They took all the coins from the shell. Then, they put another coin into the shell to test if it was true or not. The next morning, they found many coins in the shell when they checked it. Then, they got lots of money and became rich. After many months, there was even no place to put their money. They bought a mansion and could even afford to appoint the guards and the maids. The wife missed her parents when she got rich. So, she told her husband and went to her parents together. As soon as they arrived there, her family members sneered, "We have already abandoned you. You are no longer part of our family. Go away! Are you coming here for money?" The girl explained, "I just want to meet mom and dad. I am not coming here for money. We are wealthier hundred times than you." They did not believe her. They said, "It is impossible! You married to the poor boy who sells only crabs. How could you get so wealthy?" Then, she told them everything about the miracle shell. But they still didn't believe them. So, the girl and her husband told them, "Let's go and check if you don't believe us." Her parents said, "If that is true, we will accept you again. We will warmly welcome both of you." They all went to the boy and the girl's house to check whether it was true or not. When they arrived there, they witnessed there were a lot of money. They believed them in the end. From that day, they stayed together happily.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
