I am going to expound the way the greatgrand parents told the story of Manau and explain the words they used to formulate meaning of Manau. To understand the word Manau, we need to know some words and phrases first. In a family after the frist son, (magam) or the first daughter, (makaw) is born, second son, (manaw) or malu, (second daughter) is born. Our ancestors called having children after first born child as, "manau nau ai". They called it, "ma manau nau ai". If a woman gave birth to a child every year, they called it, "ma manau" is very straight and close. Because of that when naming a child, they called, "gamnau" first born son, "kawnau" first daughter, "lunau" second daughter, "htu nau" the fourth daughter, "tangnau" the fifth son, "kai nau" the fifth daugher. Some they called the second son as "naunaw" or "ningnau naw". If they didn't have decendant or if there was infertiliy, they performed "Manau" to get blessing to have children. Therefore, we need to know the word, "nau" There are many usage of "nau" in other phrases, too. The names of our first Manau dance were jawjau Manau (worship Manau), sut hkaw Manau (prosperity Manau). Worship Manau means venerating the Creator, prosperity Manau means using our prosperity, using what we have gold, money, in worshiping without the attitude of attachment. Nowadays, we have kumran Manau (Manau dance before migration), kumrum Manu (Manau dance when family or kins come together), Padang Manau (victory Manau) and sut hpaw Manau (prosperity Manau). Therefore, Manau means staying close to Almighty Creator, being fertile to multiply, and to worship and praise the Almighty Creator. We can draw meaning like this. This is the meaning of Manau.
