Long long ago, there was a couple called Hpunggan Ja Nan and Majan Roi Shun. They had a boy. The boy was called Ninggawn Wa. At the time that the family was living, we, Wunpawng national had not existed yet. They had existed first. After that, their son, Ninggawn Wa was born. One day, Ninggawn Wa became an adult and left home. He left home and was staying in a far place. When his father and mother were getting older and staying themselves, one day, they missed their son very much. Even though they called their son to return home, the son did not return. So, the father, Majan Roi Shun sent a agent to his son, Ninggawn Wa. The father asked a night eagle to send a message. "Your father is very sicked and it almost dies," sent a message. Then, the night eagle also went and delivered the message. "Your father and mother are nearly dead. They asked you to return home. Your father is going to die," said the night eagle. But, Ninggawn Wa did not return. He did not return and was just living there. He was living there together with a girl who came from the land of the sun. Because he was living with the girl, he did not want to return home. The girl also did not allow him to return home. Later, the night eagle also returned and told the father. "Your son doesn't want to return. He is living with the girl. He said that he won't return," the night eagle said. Then, the mother, Hpunggan Ja Nan said that "So, tell him that his mother is going to die. Tell him that his mother has died." Then, the night eagle went again and said that "This time, your mother has died. Your mother has died." Again, Ninggawn Wa did not listen to the night eagle. He kept saying that "I don't return home." Because he was living happily with his wife, he did not want to return home. One night, he thought to himself that "It said that my father and mother have died. I should return home." So, he went to the land of his wife to get permission to bring his wife to his home. He went to the land of his wife, the land of the sun. In the land of the sun, the parents of his wife, his parents-in-law said that "You have to ask to marry our daughter as per traditional." Then, he felt depressed and returned because his parents had already passed away. He returned home alone because his wife was kept by her parents in the land of the sun. Although he knew that his parents had passed away, he just decided to return home. When he got home, his parents were still alive. So, "Father and mother, the night eagle said that you two had passed away. But, you still alive now," said the son. "We said like that because you kept saying that you don't want to return. Your mother and father, we are going to die soon. After we die, our hair will become the natural herbal medicine on the ground. Our hair will become herbal medicine. And, our bodies will become the rocks here. Our viscera, inner parts of the body will become rubies," the parents said. "Our whole body including hands and legs will become the rocks." After the father and mother told their son, they had passed away. Then, the man went to the land of the sun. And, he asked to bring his wife. He asked to bring his wife as per the tradition. On the way he brought his wife, there were a lot of paddy plants. They were going through paddy fields, Therefore, before we converted to Christian, during the nat worship period, a bride was needed to bring through paddy plants, which was called Nbang.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,426 translations are currently available (October 19, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
