Title Madu wa hte madu jan (The husband and the wife) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
I will tell you about an event that truly happened in a village. Although it was a small village, the villagers were united. They were farmers. They also searched for food in the forest. However, those villagers disappeared in the forest. They didn't know where those villagers went. Then the villagers gathered somewhere and discussed the problem. They felt afraid to go into the forest. Then they couldn't have food from there. After discussion, they knew that there was a wild gaur in the forest. Then they kept discussing how to deal with it. "We will go there. We know much about hunting," said the two hunters from nearby villages. The two hunters went there to look for the gaur. Although they looked for it the whole day, they couldn't find it. They took only percussion lock firearms and a basket and went into the forest. When it was getting dark, they said, "Let's go back. We don't see any gaurs." On their way back to the village, they faced the gaur right in front of them. They didn't expect to see the gaur face-to-face. However, they managed to fire the gaur. Although they shot it, it didn't die. Then it was getting mad. It attacked them fiercely. They had to run quickly to escape from the danger. When the gaur heard their sound, it followed the sound and kept attacking them. Then the gaur happened to be in the place where many trees were growing. The hunters didn't know that the gaur was there. They were separated while they were running. When they were giving signals to each other, the gaur heard them and tried to attack them again. Then one hunter climbed the tree in order to escape. The other one thought to shoot the gaur, so he followed the gaur. But it made the gaur angrier. Then it fiercely tossed that man. The man on the tree was so scared. The vines and bamboos were growing on it too. The gaur couldn't keep itself calm. He heard its angry snort. Then he just fainted because he was too frightened. When he regained his consciousness, it was already morning. He knew that his friend might not escape because he heard the angry snort the whole night. He was afraid to check whether his friend was dead or alive. Then he just went back home. The villagers took guns and went there to see if the gaur was still alive. The gaur was already dead. The hunter was tragically dead too. His flesh was all over the place. The villagers found a watch and his broken hand. They put them in a sack and buried them all. "He is the one who killed our big enemy. We don't have to be frightened of anything and can find food in the forest because of him." His wife and children grieved for him. They cried sorrowfully. The villagers didn't have to be scared of the gaur anymore since then. So they held a celebration happily. They honoured the hunter's wife (family) for her husband's sacrifice. I am just telling you about a true event that happened in the past.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,426 translations are currently available (October 19, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
