The Straits is an Australian television drama series for ABC1[2] filmed in Cairns, the Torres Strait Islandsand other Far North Queensland locations.

The series follows the Montebello family, whose business involves smuggling drugs into Australia, and guns and exotic wildlife out, making use of ties of blood and loyalty in the Torres Strait Islands. When Harry Montebello, the head of the family, starts to plan his succession, he sparks a vicious family power struggle. While under attack from ambitious bikers and mercurial Papua New Guinea Raskol gangs, the family must hold together through torture, assassination, and imprisonment.

RELEASED JAN 27 2012
This is music, sounds and songs for murder, guilt and pay-back. Love and intrigue. A sense of place and amongst the metropolis of Cairns (the city in the north), to the many white sand Torress Strait Island communities and then up across the border into jungles, swampland's, mountains and atolls of Papua New Guinea.

This album showcases some of the regions unique new artists such as Maupower, Airileke, Ngaiire and Mogu as well as lengendry artists Uncle Seaman Dan, Albert David, George Telek and Kadu. Amongst the Raskols, the Church congregations, the Montoebello family subterfuge, the Cairns bikie gangs, the corrupt police, the crocodile farms, mangrove swamps and turquoise waters of the tropical north we hear string-band, reggae, hip-hop, old pearling songs, traditional sing sings and score featuring instruments unique to these parts: mambu, garamuts, warups, kundus, conch shells and of course the ubiquitous ukulele. Immerse yourself in it.
