This is the first part of "Hkrai Gam and Hkrai Naw." Long ago, in a place called Htawng Yang village, there was a widow. The village was near the Mali River. She had no friends in the neighborhood to work in the field with her. She worked in the fields alone. While she was working alone, a dragon living in the Mali River always came to suck the pumpkin flowers in the field. The widow also always came to the field alone. Dragons can transform into humans. He befriended the widow, and after a while, the widow became pregnant. When the time came, the widow gave birth to two healthy boys. When they grew a little, the villagers asked, "Who is your father?" "Who is your father?" When the two couldn't say anything, the villagers said, "You are children without a father," and named them "Hkrai Gam and Hkrai Naw (fatherless eldest and second son)." When the two grew older, feeling embarrassed, they asked their mother, "Hey, mother, people call us fatherless children." "Show us our father." "Tell us about our father." Then, the mother said to them, "When the pumpkin flowers bloom," "go to my old field." Hkrai Gam and Hkrai Naw did as their mother said, and went to her field many times, but saw no one, they only saw a dragon sucking the pumpkin flowers. They went back and told their mother, "Mother, there was no father." "But there was a dragon sucking the pumpkin flowers." Then, the mother answered, "Yes, that dragon is your father." Hkrai Gam and Hkrai Naw said, "Our father lives in the water," "so let's catch him with an iron chain." They hammered iron to make a chain. As they hammered day and night, the dragon living in the water got a headache from the noise. Having a headache, to stop the two from hammering, the dragon sent a crab. The crab came to the two hammering and said, "You must not hammer here." The brothers got angry and said, "You crab!" They grabbed the crab with tongs and roasted it over a fire. That's why crabs are red today. Thus, Hkrai Gam and Hkrai Naw continued hammering. The crab returned to the dragon and said, "These two roasted me over the fire." The dragon told a shrimp, "Now you go." "I have a headache." "Ask them to stop hammering." So, this time the shrimp went. The shrimp said, "Hey, you must not hammer here." "The dragon says his head is very shaky." Hkrai Gam and Hkrai Naw got angry, and grabbed the shrimp with tongs and roasted it over a fire. That's why shrimp turn red when cooked today. No matter who was sent, Hkrai Gam and Hkrai Naw didn't stop hammering, so finally the dragon came out. When the dragon came out, Hkrai Gam and Hkrai Naw tied the dragon with the forged chain. Then the dragon said, "My two children, I am your father." "From now on, your names are no longer Hkrai Gam and Hkrai Naw." "Call yourselves Du Nau Gam and Du Nau Naw." "If you want to tie me up," "tie me to this tree on the riverbank." "Then I won't be able to escape." The two tied the dragon there. Thus, they were no longer Hkrai Gam and Hkrai Naw. They became Du Nau Gam and Du Nau Naw. After a while, the dragon said, "My children, release me." "I will give you three treasures." The three treasures were, a bow called Kang Seng Bow. A large bow also called Bum Hkrang Kung Li. A sword called Ningtawng Sword that can cut anything. And a small golden basket called Ja Shingwoi. After giving them the three treasures, the two released the dragon. Having received the names Du Nau Gam and Du Nau Naw, they decided not to live in that village anymore, and made a raft from banana trees, and floated down the river on the raft. As they floated down the river on the raft, their father, the dragon, lay on the raft to greet them. The older brother was surprised and accidentally cut the dragon with the given sword. When he cut it with the sword, he not only cut the dragon but also cut the raft in two. The raft split in two, and the brothers were carried in different directions. Being carried away like this, the older brother had the golden basket and the sword, and the younger brother had the Kang Seng Bum Hkrang Kung Li Bow.
This is the second part of "Hkrai Gam and Hkrai Naw." Thus, when the two were carried away in different directions, the younger brother was carried to a place called Dinghta Wa Yang in the eastern Mali River. The older brother floated downstream and arrived at the confluence of the Mali and Nmai rivers. In Dinghta Wa Yang, where the younger brother was carried, there lived a giant eagle that kidnapped and ate children. The giant eagle had built its nest on a very tall tree. However, the nest was very thick and could not be directly viewed. The eagle kept catching and eating children. The villagers found Du Nau Naw and said, "Sage, since you have the bow called Bum Hrang Kung Li," "please shoot down that eagle." He also tried to shoot down the eagle. But the tree with the nest was covered with large vines which hid the eagle's nest, so he couldn't see where the nest was. If that vines could be cut, they would wither and reveal the eagle's nest. But the village did not have a sword that could cut such large vines. Du Nau Naw remembered that his older brother was given a large sword and set out to find his brother in the direction he was carried away. So, when he arrived at the confluence of the Mali and Nmai rivers, on the opposite bank of the Mali River, a female monkey was carrying a golden basket and picking up crabs. He thought that if the golden basket was his brother's, then his brother must also be there. He asked the female monkey, "Is the river very deep? Or shallow?" he shouted. The female monkey only answered, "Deep, deep, shallow, shallow." No matter how much he asked, she only answered, "Deep, deep, shallow, shallow, deep, deep, shallow, shallow." So, Du Nau Naw got frustrated and shot the female monkey with his bow. He crossed to the opposite bank and got the female monkey's golden basket and looked for his brother. He found his brother. Seeing him, the older brother asked, "Brother, did you see my wife?" The younger brother answered, "I didn't see your wife," "but I saw a female monkey." "When I asked if the river was deep or shallow," "she only said, 'Deep, deep, shallow, shallow, deep, deep, shallow, shallow,'" "so I shot her with my bow," he said. Then, the older brother said, "What! That female monkey was my wife!" The younger brother told his older brother why he came. "Brother, in the village with the big vine, there is a giant eagle that catches and eats children." "To shoot it down," "please cut that big vine with your sword." The older brother agreed with his words, and they went back to the place where the eagle's nest was. When they arrived at the tree, the older brother cut the large vine with his big sword. The vine withered, and they could see the eagle in the nest. Thus, the younger brother shot the eagle with his bow and arrow. After shooting the eagle, a large mushroom grew where the eagle fell. People passing by would always pick and eat the mushroom. The first people who came found the mushroom very large, so they cooked and ate only the cap of the mushroom, and it was very delicious. Later people who came found the cap gone, so they picked and ate only the stem of the mushroom, and it was very delicious. But what the people who ate the cap and those who ate the stem thought was... the people who ate the cap thought, "Hmm, if even the cap is this delicious," "how delicious must the stem be?" Similarly, the people who ate the stem thought, "Hmm, if even the stem is this delicious," "how delicious must the cap be?" They kept thinking such things. From constantly thinking such things, spirits that possess people were born.
