Title N Lu Ai Wa Yak Ai, N Chye Ai Wa Grau Yak Ai | It is hard for those who do not have, but harder for those who do not know.
Description Translation (Tu Awng & Keita Kurabe)
What I'm about to tell is about the proverb, "It is hard for those who do not have, but harder for those who do not know." Long ago, in the Hka Hku region, there lived a group of Hkun Ru men known for their lies. They were people who joked with friends. One morning, in front of a house, a group of Hkun Ru young men, four, five, six in number, came to play and were chatting. One of the men was looking down at the ground the whole time. What he was looking at appeared like a dropping of a hen sitting with raised feathers, dull and covered with dust. It looked like a chicken dropping, but was round and seemed artificial, so the man picked it up to look. Upon picking it up, he said, "Hmm, this seems like a chicken dropping but is very heavy." "What could it be?" "It looks like a chicken dropping," he said. Another man said, "Alright, let me hold it." He took it to weigh in his hand. Weighing it in his hand, he said, "Surely, chicken droppings can't be this heavy?" "Dried chicken droppings aren't this heavy," he said. Yet another man said, "Let me hold it this time." "This is a bullet used by hunters to shoot their prey." "The smell of ammunition still lingers." Another man then said, "Alright, pass it to me," and took his turn to hold it. In this manner, they passed it around. At that time, one man said, "This is a bullet that fell from a hunter's bag." "A bullet, a bullet." "A bullet to shoot prey." Another man said, "Alright, let me hold it." After holding it, he said, "It's nothing special." "This is just a chicken dropping." "Nothing more." He threw it away with a thud. In truth, it was a lump of gold. They had never seen gold before. Having never seen gold and only having seen chicken droppings, they did not recognize the gold as gold. They had the fortune to find gold. However, they did not have the fortune to eat from it. Hence, there is a Kachin proverb that says, "It is hard for those who do not have," "But harder for those who do not know," as the proverb goes. Investigating whatever it may be is important. Otherwise, one is prone to lose it. This is how the old people spoke of it as a proverb. Thank you.
