"The Story of How a Tree Became a Witness" Once upon a time, there was an old man and an orphan with no parents in a village. The orphan worked hard. Even though he was alone without parents, he worked hard. Day by day, his money accumulated, and he became wealthy. Having saved money, one day, he wanted to travel for two or three months. At that time, he thought about where to leave his saved money. Then, there was a big tree, not far from the village. He met the old man at the base of this tree. And, he asked the old man to look after his money during his journey. "Hey, dear old man," "You don't go anywhere, do you?" "I am about to go on a journey now." "While I am traveling," "I want to entrust you with the money I have saved." "I will come back to retrieve it." He entrusted his money to the old man. After leaving the money, the young man set off on his journey. Thus, he went on his journey, and about three months passed. After about three months, when he returned to the village, he said to the old man to whom he had entrusted his money, "I have come to retrieve the money I left with you." "Please give it back to me," he said. Then, the old man pretended to be very surprised. Pretending to be surprised, he said, "No." "I don't know." "Who, where, when did you entrust it to?" "Whom did you entrust it to?" "Who?" "Who are you?" "I haven't taken any money." "You must be mistaken," he denied. The young man said, "No." "I entrusted it to you because I was going on a journey." "It's my money." Even saying so, the old man continued to deny. As he continued to deny, the young man, unable to do anything, said, "Well, then," "Let's go to someone who can solve our problem," he said. Then, the old man thought, "Ah," "I shall testify that his story is not true," he thought. The old man said, "Then," "Let's go." "I must prove it's not me." "Let's go," he said. The old man said, "No matter how you say it," "it's not me." Not only saying so, but also thinking in his heart that he could deny the young man's story, he followed. When he followed, there was a judge, not far from the village. They went to the man capable of judging disputes. Then, they explained the situation. Upon arriving there, they told what had happened. The young man said, "I was about to go on a journey for two or three months." "I left my money with this old man." "When I came back," "and asked this old man for it," "he wouldn't give it back." "When I ask for the money," "this old man denies it," he said so. Then, the judge said to them, "When you entrusted him with the money" "where did you do it?" The young man said, "We did it at the base of a tree." "We met at the base of the tree," "and did it there." The owner of the money, the young man, told the judge. Then, at that moment, the old man said, "No, I didn't take it," he continued to deny. Then, the judge said, "Then," "bring the tree that was standing" when you entrusted this old man with the money," he said. "Bring that tree here." The old man thought to himself, "That tree can't do anything." "There's no way the tree is coming." "I win." "It's just a tree." "There's no way a tree can speak." The old man thought so in his heart and was not worried. The young man told the judge, "Judge, the tree cannot speak." "Nor can it move." "Nor come walking here." "Just say that I have called for it," and sent him to summon the tree. The young man went to the tree. After a while had passed since the young man had left, the judge suddenly asked the old man, "Could it be that the young man has not yet reached the tree?" Upon hearing this, the old man unwittingly confessed, "That tree is very far away." "He won't arrive just yet," he answered. Therefore, the judge said, "Ah, you said you did not keep the money." "Why do you know how far away that tree is?" "Your own mouth has testified." "You have testified that you were entrusted with the money," he said. "This tree has testified that you were entrusted with the money." As he was saying this, the young man returned. He said, "I have summoned the tree." the judge said, "Before you came back," "the tree has testified." "Therefore, the money you entrusted will be returned to you." He had the old man bring the money. Realizing his lie was exposed, the old man handed over the money. Thus, the old man returned the money to the young man. The story ends here. Thank you.

Description These materials were produced by Keita Kurabe and members of the Kachin community as part of a community-based collaborative documentation and revitalization project in northern Myanmar.
