The story I'm about to tell is "The Origin of the Poppy." Long ago, in a large town of a country, there lived the most beautiful woman in the world. Anyone who saw her even once fell in love with her immediately. Men from all over the world came to see her beauty. One day, men from nine countries arrived. Seeing her, they fell in love and proposed to her. Without exception, all proposed to her. She could not refuse the proposals from the men of the nine countries. Every man had power. She could not choose any of them. Since she could not refuse anyone, she was troubled. So, she said to them, "I can't reject any of you." "I like all of you." "Because you all have a place in my heart," "I can't marry any of you." "However, there is one thing I must tell you." "I can't become the bride of any of you." "You can't take me as your bride." "But, I will never forget you." "So please listen carefully to what I'm about to say." "I will soon die." "When you visit me again," "if you don't find me," "a flower will bloom where I am buried." "You can smell the fragrance of that flower" "to soothe your love for me," she left them with these words. Thus, after proposing to her, they returned to their countries. Later, the men from the nine countries who had proposed to her came to see her. When they arrived, they could not find her, only her family was there. When they asked her family, they said, "She has passed away." "Our daughter, whom you loved, has died." "There is her grave." They showed the place of her grave. The men grieved and did nothing but cry. They went there and cried almost every day. Then, one day, as she had said, a flower bloomed from her grave. The bud also opened. As she had said, "Please smell the fragrance of the flower." "It will have a very pleasant scent," the flower had a very pleasant scent. Because it had such a pleasant scent, the men from the nine countries came every year to smell the fragrance of the flower. Because the flower had such a pleasant scent, not only the men who loved her but more and more people came to smell the fragrance day by day. The flower had a very pleasant scent. As it grew larger, it produced sap. When the sap was produced, people scraped it off and smelled it. Even though it has a beautiful and pleasant scent, it brings ruin to people. It causes loss of wealth. It leads to the loss of nations. In order for us, the future generations, not to consume opium, the people of old times told this story. Thank you.

Description These materials were produced by Keita Kurabe and members of the Kachin community as part of a community-based collaborative documentation and revitalization project in northern Myanmar. Narration was contributed by Sumlut Gun Mai, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Gumtung Lu Awng, and Jumhpawk Nyein Chan Thu. Illustrations were contributed by Kahtantu Htoi Awng, Shatum Naw Ra, Sumlut Mun San Pan, and Ikumi Wakana.
