Every year, when it was time to reap the corn, a troupe of monkeys ate them all, and he couldn't reap any. Year after year, he planted, but could not harvest. One year, he did well in his cornfield. That year, he went to the field earlier than usual. "I'll go to the field early," "and reap it before the monkeys eat it." When he went to the field, he also took some fermented rice with him. He carried it in a bamboo tube. He left the bamboo tube filled with fermented rice in a hut in the field. He stood it up. After leaving it in the hut, he went to the field to harvest the corn. When he arrived at the field, he harvested the corn. Being very tired from the harvest, he decided to return to the hut to eat the fermented rice he had left there. So, he went back to the hut. When he returned, he found that a troop of monkeys from somewhere had eaten all the fermented rice. He said, "Oh, I was so tired and wanted to eat the fermented rice!" "But the monkeys ate it!" When he arrived at the hut, he saw the monkeys scatter and run away. He said, "Oh, I wanted to eat the fermented rice too!" "But the monkeys ate it!" The next day, the man filled a large jar with fermented rice and went to the hut again. He again left the jar of fermented rice in the hut. And he thought, "Anyway, I'll secretly watch today."
