The story I'm going to tell is "The Twins Named by Spirits". Once upon a time, there was a man who traveled around the world. One day, while he was traveling, he couldn't find a place to stay, and night fell, he arrived at a graveyard. The man had heard that in such times, it was not appropriate to stay in an empty house, and that it was safer to stay in a graveyard. So in a grave, he said, "The possessor, please let me stay in your place as a shelter for tonight!" Then he rested and slept there. That night, the spirits in the graveyard went out, and learned that twins were born in the village. They returned to the graveyard, and told the spirit where the man was staying, "Friend, twins have been born in the village." "Let's go naming them!" They invited him. But he responded, "You guys go!" "I have a guest tonight." "You just name them" "and tell me later what you named them!" He replied that way. Then all the other spirits left him and went to the village. They entered the house where the twins were born. One of the twins was a girl, and the other was a boy. So the spirits named the boy, "When he is of age to hunt" "May he be bitten by a tiger and die!" They named the girl, "When she is of age to pound rice" "May a buffalo horn hanging on the pillar fall" "and pierce her head causing her to die!" After the spirits named them like that, they went back to their graveyard, and told the names to the spirit of the grave where the man was staying. The man in the grave heard what they said. The next morning, he went down to the village, and indeed found the house where the twins had been born. He told the people in the house what he had heard. However, they did not pay any heed to the man's words, and lived on without doing anything. Thus, when the twins grew up, just as the spirits had named them, when the girl came of age to pound rice, a buffalo horn fell from the pillar, and she died. Because of that, the father, in order to prevent the boy from meeting the fate named by the spirits, to make the given name disappear, went out to hunt, caught a tiger, and tied it to the pillar. He called many villagers, to make the name given by the spirits to the boy disappear, he had the boy jump over the tiger seven times. When he made him jump over, the boy jumped over the tiger's head, and on the seventh time, he stepped on the tiger's fang, and he died. Even though they tried to make the names given by the spirits disappear, because the spirits had already named them, it ended up as the spirits had named. That's why we, the Kachin people, name newborn babies as fast as possible. This is to prevent the spirits from naming them first.
