Now let me tell you a story, "The Female Ghosts Who Came to the Market." Once upon a time, there was a morning market in a village. At that market, Indians used to sell meat every morning. The market was not far from the village. One morning, before the dawn, two brothers arrived early at the market. While they were preparing their shop, very beautiful women came to buy meat from them. In the dim light before dawn, two beautiful women appeared before them. Until then, only the villagers from the neighborhood used to come to their shop to buy meat. No one ever came to buy anything at this early hour before dawn. However, the brothers sold the meat to the two women. Despite the early hour, they thought these women came to buy meat, so they sold the meat. They put the money they received into a box. And then, they continued their business as usual. When dawn broke, other people started to gather at the market. With the break of dawn, other people came to buy meat. At that moment, when they were giving change to another customer, they opened the box where they had kept the money. They tried to take out the money they had received from the two women. When they opened the box, there were bones in the box instead of money. Because there were bones, the brothers were very surprised and scared. When they asked the elders, they were told that the market used to be a graveyard. Therefore, they might have been ghosts or evil spirits that came out of the graves. The ghosts had taken the form of women, and left bones, not money, at the market. Since then, the brothers never started their business before dawn. Such stories still persist in that place to this day. This is the story as handed down from the people of old. Thank you.

Description These materials were produced by Keita Kurabe and members of the Kachin community as part of a community-based collaborative documentation and revitalization project in northern Myanmar. Narration was contributed by Sumlut Gun Mai, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Gumtung Lu Awng, and Jumhpawk Nyein Chan Thu. Illustrations were contributed by Kahtantu Htoi Awng, Shatum Naw Ra, Sumlut Mun San Pan, and Ikumi Wakana.
