Title Sharaw Teng Teng Pang Pang Byin Mat Ai Lam | Why the Tiger Became Spotted
Description Translation (Seng Pan & Keita Kurabe)
The story I'll tell is "Why Tigers Became Spotted". Once, tigers were not spotted as they are now. They were white. How did they become spotted? Once, a tiger and Hkanghtang Mang Bya were travelling together. Hkanghtang Mang Bya tricked the tiger and ran away. The tiger, enraged, sought to kill Hkanghtang Mang Bya and went after him. One day, he was able to catch Hkanghtang Mang Bya. Then, Hkanghtang Mang Bya said, "Brother Tiger, don't kill me yet." "If you kill me," "You will lose out." "You will lose out a lot." "Please, don't kill me yet." "I have a drum." "Beat it." "It's a drum that extends life." "Since I'm about to die," "there's no point if I beat it." "So you should beat it." "I'll tell you where it is." He said. The tiger, forgetting he'd been tricked before, believed what Hkanghtang Mang Bya said. "Really?" "If that's the case, tell me where it is." "If you let me beat it," "I'll spare your life." "Let me beat it." He said. Hkanghtang Mang Bya said, "Of course, Brother Tiger!" And what did he make the tiger beat? He led the tiger to a beehive in a tree and said, "This is the drum." "Beat this." He said. When the tiger beat it, bees came out of the hive and stung the tiger all over. While the tiger was being stung by the bees, Hkanghtang Mang Bya ran away again. Because of the bee stings, the tiger's face and body swelled. He was in great pain and extremely angry. The tiger chased Hkanghtang Mang Bya again, caught him, and planned to kill him. But Hkanghtang Mang Bya said, "Hey, Brother Tiger, please don't kill me." "I won't lie again this time." "I'll let you sit on a valuable chair." "It's a golden chair." "If you sit on it," "all the animals in the forest will consider you the king." "Since I'm dying," "sitting on it means nothing to me." "I want you to sit on it." Upon hearing this, the tiger believed his words again. Hkanghtang Mang Bya said like that and took the tiger to a cow dung on a thorny tree and said, "This is the chair." "When you sit," "don't sit slowly." "To become a king," "you must sit with all your might." When the tiger sat on the cow dung with all his might, thorns in the dung stuck into his buttocks, causing him great pain. When he jumped into the water, due to the stings from the bees and the thorns, the tiger became spotted. And it has remained to this day.
