Title Bau Lagut Nang Bya | Nang Bya Who Stole the Gong
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai & Keita Kurabe)
The story I am telling you now is "Nang Bya who stole the gong." A man thought, "Nang Bya can only tell a lie." "He doesn't know how to steal things." So he said to Nang Bya, "My brother Nang Bya, you only know how to lie to the others." "I have never heard of you stealing." "You are not good at stealing, aren't you?" Then Nang Bya said, "Brother, lying and stealing things are the same thing." "Stealing is not difficult." "If you are good at lying, then you are also good at stealing." The man said, "If you say they are the same," "Okay, try stealing something from my house!" He invited him to do so. Nang Bya asked him, "What valuable thing, which can attract me, do you have at home?" The man said, "I have a traditional gong that weighs a tenth of a viss." "Come steal it tonight!" "You can come tonight at any time you like!" After that he went home and said to his wife, "Nang Bya will come to our house tonight to steal the gong." "When he comes," "blow fire to light it!" He picked up some firewood. He also prepared a pipe to blow the fire. He also told his two daughters, "Tonight Nang Bya will steal the gong." "Don't sleep tonight!" He hung his knife on a hook in case Nang Bya came to steal the gong. They waited for Nang Bya the whole night. After waiting all night, Nang Bya did not show up. At that time, Nang Bya was at home eating goat meat. Because he did not show up, the man said to his wife and daughters, "It is almost dawn." "Nang Bya will come no more." "Let's go to bed." They went to bed. As soon as they were asleep, Nang Bya came to the house. Nang Bya took the pipe to blow the fire and left a flute. He also took the knife of the man. and left the goat's head instead. He also left the goat's stomach between the two sleeping girls. He then secretly stole the man's gong. He stole it that way. When night fell, he beat the gong he had stolen a short distance from the village. He shouted, "I stole your gong!" When they heard Nang Bya beat the gong, the man and his family were shocked and woke up. The wife tried to blow the fire with the pipe. But the fire did not light. Only the flute sound came out. The two daughters also woke up to help their father. They found a baby-like object between them. "Your baby! My baby! Your baby! My baby!" They quarreled. The man rushed to take what he thought was his knife and slung it over his shoulder. Around the village, he shouted "Thief! Thief!" What he had slung over his shoulder was not a knife but a goat's head. So the villagers laughed at him. So Nang Bya is not only good at lying. He is also good at stealing.
