Title N-gun ja wa a lam | The strong man

This story is about a strong man. Once upon a time, there was a married couple. The wife was pregnant. She gave birth to a son. On that day, her husband was not at home. He had gone out. As soon as he was born, the baby started to speak. "Mom, rice, please give me rice!" "Mom, I want to eat it!" The mother said, "Oh! This child must be something special!" "As soon as he was born" "he asks for rice!" "He hasn't even sucked on my breast yet!" But she gave food to him as her son asked. When he finished his meal, he asked, "How about Dad?" "Where's Dad?" When asked, his mother said, "He's down by the river cutting wood to make a paddy mortar." It is a mortar used for pounding rice. Each village in the mountains has a water fetching station. It is located in the valley down the mountains. We Kachins live in the mountains. So we have to go down the mountain to get to the river. Then the son said, "I'm going to visit my father." And he went out. He went out and when he got to his father, he asked, "Dad, what are you doing?" "I'm cutting wood for a mortar." "I'm cutting wood." The son waited for his father to finish making the mortar. When the father finished it, the son carried the mortar by himself. We use the mortar for pounding rice. Kachin mortars are very large. The wood for the mortar was very large. The son carried that heavy mortar alone. All by himself. The son, who had just been born, carried it all by himself. His father was surprised. "No way, he's only just been born!" "He is so strong!" He was surprised. And so they lived. Soon, the name of the boy was spread around the villages. The chiefs heard that news and thought, "Umm, this child will usurp our positions." But without reason the chiefs couldn't kill him as they wanted. So they thought of an idea how to handle that boy. And they said, "Come, mighty one, you are so strong!" "Go to the land of witches and get a bushel of gold back!" A bushel is a unit about the size of a large basket. It is a large basket that can hold a lot of grains. They asked the strong boy, "Go get the gold back!" And they sent him. They asked him to go and get back the gold that they lent before. The strong boy accepted to do that. "Okay, I'll go." He started to prepare for the journey. But he asked the chiefs, "Let two or three people accompany me." The chiefs said, "Fine!" They gave him attendants. Together with them, the strong boy set off on his journey. On their way, when they arrived in the forest, they met a man. He was cutting wood. He was cutting wood not with a sword. He was cutting it with his shins. The strong boy asked, "Hey brother, brother cutting wood!" "Do you know the way to the land of witches?" When asked, the man cutting the tree didn't care. He didn't answer anything. Since he did not answer, the strong boy grabbed him with his hand. He grabbed him with all his strength. It hurt so much. It hurt to death. "Brother, let me go! Let go of me!" "I'll tell you the way!" "I'll show you the way!" He showed him the way. Then the strong boy and his fellows continued their journey. After they had walked for some time, they saw another man who was fishing in the ocean, using an elephant as a bait. We, humans, fish with worms. How big was the man? He was fishing with an elephant. They ask the man as well. The strong boy asked, "Hey, brother, tell us the way to the land of witches!" The man was also with not respect. He did not think anything of the strong boy. He did not answer anything. Then, like the man before him, the strong boy grabbed his leg with his hand. When he grabbed him, the man said, "Brother! Brother! I'm going to die!" "It hurts so much!" "I'll tell you how to go there!" "Let me go!" When he said so, the strong boy let him go. The man showed them the way. "This way!" "Go straight!" They continued their journey again. On their way, when they reached a very far place, a man was straddling the sea. They saw a man straddling the sea. We Kachins describe being so big as straddling the sea. One foot stepping on the shore. Another foot steping on that side across the sea. We call it "straddling the sea." They found a man straddling the sea like that. When he saw him, the strong boy asked him like the two men he had met before. But the man did not answer. As if nothing had happened. He said nothing. So the strong boy grabbed him again and asked forcefully, "Will you tell me or not?" The man said, "Yes, yes, brother, I'll tell you! I'll tell you!" "I'll tell you the way to the land of witches!" He showed him the way. Finally, the strong boy and his fellows reached at the land of witches, just as the man had showed. They reached the land of witches. The strong boy also had wisdom. Since he had wisdom, he stayed outside the land of witches, and secretly observed. He let his fellows go first. "Go first!" "Try to enter the land of witches!" He let them go first. He let his fellows go first. When they entered the land of witches, they met an old witch. When they met her, she fed some kind of medicine to them. When they took it, they turned into pigs. The strong boy waited for his fellow. But they did not come back. So he followed them into the land of witches. When he entered the land, he met the old witch. When he met her, he asked, "Grandma, didn't my friends come here?" "Didn't you see them?" The old witch said, "They didn't come!" "I didn't see them!" "No one came here!" But the strong boy suspected her. "Hmm, if they entered this land," "they should have got to this old woman first." "It seems unlikely that she haven't seen them!" He suspected her, but said nothing. Then the old witch tried to turn him into a pig, just like his fellows. She gave him the medicine. When she gave it to him, he pretended to take it. Instead, he took the medicine he had brought himself. He hid the medicine the old witch gave him. When the old witch saw that nothing happened to the boy, she said, "Come on, grandson, let's have dinner with me!" "Blow the fire!" She devised another plan. She said, "Blow the fire!" She made the strong boy blow fire with the green stinkbug tree. When you blow fire with that tree, your eyes will tingle. The tree hurts your eyes. She said to him, "My grandson, the green stinkbug tree hurts your eyes." "When you blow fire" "close your eyes tightly!" "If you blow fire without closing your eyes" "you'll get sparks in your eyes!" "It hurts very much!" She said to him. But the strong boy was clever. Without closing his eyes, he blew the fire with all his might. The old witch thought he had closed his eyes and blown fire. So she tried to hit him with a big hammer. When he saw this, the strong boy grabbed the hammer. He grabbed it with all his might. Then he asked her, the old witch, "Where are my friends?" The old witch was in pain. "They've all turned into pigs!" she said. "Quickly turn them into human!" The force of his grip was too painful. "Give this medicine to them!' "When they take it" "they will return to humans!" The strong boy did as the old witch said and gave the medicine to them. They were able to turn back into human beings. Then the strong boy did not release her and said, "We came here to get the gold back!" "You must give back our villagers a bushel of gold!" "That is why we have come to you!" "Give us that gold!" Then the old witch offered him a bushel of gold. When she offered the gold, the strong boy gave the old witch the medicine to turn into a pig. So she turned into a pig. The strong boy and his fellows returned to their village with that gold. They went back to their village. The people of the past told the story of the strong man in this way. Thank you very much.
