I am going to tell you about "Nhkum Tu Yau and the Wild Boar." Once upon a time, there was a great diviner called Ningwa Pung Hkoi. Today, divination is done by looking at the bursting of the Kahtan bamboo, or by tearing and tying the vaginant leaves. In Ningwa Pung Hkoi's time, divination was done with round stones. If he divined with it, everything he divined was right. Then one day, a great hunter Nhkum Tu Yau hunted a wild boar. When he hunted it, he wanted to test Ningwa Pung Hkoi because he was very famous. To test him, he cut off one ear of the dead boar. And he put some leaves on the boar. Then, without showing him the boar's ear, he asked Ningwa Pung Hkoi, "Come on, Great diviner Ningwa Pung Hkoi!" "Today I could shoot a boar." "Can we eat it?" "Or not?" "Please devine it for me!" Ningwa Pung Hkoi tried divining with his round stones. What kind of divination results did he get? "The result of the divination was..." "The boar will not be there." "Nhkum Tu Yau will be sad." "I got those results." What it meant is, "The boar has resurrected and fled." "Nhkum Tu Yau will be upset." When Nhkum Tu Yau heard this, he said, "Your divining is totally wrong!" "The boar has died!" "Look at this!" He showed him the boar's ear. Ningwa Pung Hkoi was so embarrassed that he threw his stones hard to the ground. The stones were broken into pieces. Some hit the Kahtan bamboo. Some hit vaginant leaves. That is why today's divination is done with the Kahtan bamboo and vaginant leaves. After that, Nhkum Tu Yau called his friends and told them, "Let's go and eat the boar I got today!" He took them to the forest. When they arrived there, the boar he had shot and covered with leaves was gone. The boar had run away. What happened was that... the leaves he had covered the boar with were a reviving herb. The boar was revived. And it ran away. Since then, we don't use stones for divining. The Kahtan bamboo and vaginant leaves, where the pieces of the stones hit, are used for divination today.
I will continue the story of Nhkum Tu Yau and the Wild Boar. Nhkum Tu Yau took his friends to the forest to eat the wild boar he shot. However, the leaves he covered the boar with were reviving herbs. So the boar had revived and escaped. Since it had escaped, Nhkum Tu Yau said, "Hmmm, I accurately shot it." "It's probably still out there somewhere." He went around looking for the boar. When he looked around for it, he ended up in the heavenly land, where the people of the Sun lived. When he met them, Nhkum Tu Yau asked, "Have you seen Mai Byit here?" "Mai Byit" means preys that were hit by bullets. The ones that were hit by bullets but not killed. The ones that we still have to pursue. When asked, the people of the Sun said, "Ah, you are the culprit who hurt our boar!" They captured Nhkum Tu Yau. The boar he shot was in fact a spirit. He was thus captured. He was taken to the heavenly chiefs. They put him before a judge. The chiefs deliberated and said, "Don't kill Nhkum Tu Yau!" "He is a human being!" "May he live and prosper on earth!" "Give him a girl!" Not only did they not kill him, they gave him a girl. With her, they gave him a piglet too. "Raise this piglet!" "When we visit you on earth" "let's eat it!" They gave him a piglet too. At that time, The people of the Sun continued, "You Nhkum clans are the clans that have touched the herbs of revival." "So, from now on, whoever you touch or grasp" "even those who are sick" "May they be healed!" They blessed him like that. So, today, we Kachin people believe that "When the Nhkum peole massage you, you will be healed." Why? Because they are believed to be the clan that have grabbed the reviving herb. Then Nhkum Tu Yau, who was given a girl and a piglet from the heavenly land, went back to earth and lived happily with them.
I continue with our previous story on Nhkum Tu Yau and the Wild Boar. As I told you last time, Nhkum Tu Yau took the girl and the piglet given to him by the heavenly spirits and they lived back on earth. One day, near Nhkum Tu Yau's house, a cockroach and a buffalo met and talked. Above the two animals talking, there was a dove on the roof. The buffalo was very fat and beautiful. So the cockroach asked it, "What makes you so fat and beautiful?" "What do you eat?" The buffalo replied, "I eat the forest grass called Kaseng Kala." The buffalo replied. Then it asked the cockroach, "Mr Cockroach, what makes you shine so brightly?" "What do you eat?" The cockroach replied, "It's because I eat pig fat." "It makes me shine so brightly." The dove on the roof heard them talking like this. It immediately flew to the heavenly land and reported it to the heavenly spirits. "Nhkum Tu Yau killed and ate the pig you gave him!" It made such an appeal. When they heard this, the heavenly spirits said, "No way... we promised to eat the pig when we visited them on earth!" "It's not right for them to eat alone!" They called Nhkum Tu Yau and his wife back to the heavenly land. Then the daughter of the heavenly spirits, the heavenly girl, said, "My parents, we didn't eat it." "It's still alive." "We are raising it." The heavenly spirits said, "Then who lied to us?" They investigated. First, they asked a mountain imperial pigeon. How did they ask it? "Mr mountain imperial pigeon, isn't it you?" It replied, "It was not me who reported to you." Next, they asked the dove, "Mr dove, isn't it you?" The dove replied, "It was me." "It was me who reported it to you." "I heard the cockroach and the buffalo talking." "The cockroach said it had a beautiful color " "because it had eaten the pig fat." "I thought they had eaten the pig you gave them." "So I reported it to you." It said like that. Nhkum Tu Yau and his wife were right that the pig was still alive. So they were released. They were sent back to earth again. At that time, the heavenly spirits asked them, "Go back to earth" "and raise the pig well." "We will visit you." "Build an altar for us." "Set up four posts for it" "and make a platform." "Build there a ladder too." "Offer things to us there." They asked them like that. So when we offer things to spirits, the spirits of heaven and the spirits of the sun, we build an alter with four posts. It originates from this story.
