Title Nang Bya masu sharin ai lam | Nang Bya taught people how to lie
Description Translation (Seng Pan & Keita Kurabe)
I'm talking about a story of Nang Bya, who taught people how to lie. Nang Bya is a very good liar. The people who have been lied to do not even realize that they have been lied to. Only afterwards do they say, "Oh, this was a lie?" They realize it later. So the villagers wanted to lie as well as Nang Bya. They wanted Nang Bya to teach them how to lie. So one man asked Nang Bya first, "Hey, Nang Bya, teach me how to lie." Then Nang Bya said, "No." "I don't know how to lie." But the man said again and again, "Tell me, tell me!" So Nang Bya said, "I don't know how to lie." "But if you ask me so much, I'll tell you." "But I don't have time to teach you now." "I have to do my work at home." "If my wife finds out that I'm telling you lies, she'll be furious." "So I have to do my work first." The man wanted to know how to lie. "Then I'll help you with your work." "I'll help you!" he said. Then Nang Bya said, "Now I have to carry the bamboo." The man said, "All right! I'll carry it!" He carried it to the end. Then Nang Bya said, "If you finish carrying the bamboo today" "I can tell you how to lie tomorrow." But the next day, he didn't tell him. Even after many days, he didn't tell him. So the man got angry. "Nang Bya, you said you would teach me how to lie!" "I carried the bamboo for you!" "I helped you with all the work!" "You still won't teach me?" He got angry. Nang Bya said, "What? Because you asked me to teach you how to lie" "I already taught it to you!" "I lied to you when I told you that I would tell you a lie tomorrow!" "I lied to you to help me carry the bamboo!" "I told you how to lie!" he said. In this way, he lied to others who came to ask him how to lie. He did the same to everyone. "Now I have to do that first!" "I have to do this!" "I have to cut the grass!" "I have to build the house!" That's how he lied to people. People did not realize that they had been lied to. Only later did they realize that they had been lied to. Another man asked one day, "Teach me how to lie!" Then Nang Bya said, as he had done to others, "I don't have time right now." "I have to build a weir." "I'll teach you when I have finished building it." And the man said, "Let's build it together." "It will go quicker if we do it together." "OK!" Nang Bya said. They built the weir together. When we Kachin people build a weir, we put a log where the water flow is strong and we support it with two branches. Nang Bya made the man hold a large log at a place where the flow was steep. "Don't let go of it!" "If you let it go, the weir will be distorted." "If it is distorted, the fish won't get in." "So hold it steady!" "I'm going to look for the branches." "Hold it steady!" "I'm going out there." He went out. The man thought he would be taught how to lie. He held the log firmly in place. But no matter how long it took Nang Bya did not come back. So the man got very angry. "He made me carry the log all day long!" He got very angry. He left the place. At night he went to look for Nang Bya. Then he found Nang Bya drinking tea as if nothing had happened. He was playing with cowries. When he saw it, the man got angry and came into and said, "Nang Bya! I'll kill you!" "You have kept me waiting all day today!" "I've been hungry all day!" "I was really shaking!" And Nang Bya said, "So? You asked me how to lie!" "I wasn't keen on it either," "but you asked me to teach you!" "I just taught you how to lie!" He said.
