Title Ga tsun ga la a lam | The communal work
Description Translation (Dau Hkawng & Keita Kurabe)
I'm going to talk about communal work. This is a culture practised by people living in mountain areas. In the mountainous areas, everything is done in collaboration. For example, when building a new house, when reaping the fields, when loughing the rice fields, when we work, we do not do it for a wage. We help each other to do it. When ploughing a family's field we call on all the people in the village to plough the field together for that family. The next day, or a day or two later, we plough another family's field together. In this way, the whole village works together. From planting to harvesting, there is no need to pay wages. We help each other. Similarly, when building a house from the preparation of the timber to the completion of the house everyone works together. Whatever we do, we work together without wages. No matter which family it is for, whether it is building a house, whether it is harvesting rice, whatever it is, we work together. Just as your friends come to help you when you build your house, when your friends build their houses, you in turn help them. Even if you don't have money you can do everything by working together.
