I am going to tell you about why there are some weed seeds in rice grains. A long time ago, in the mountains where many jungle spirits lived people cultivated rice in the swidden. When the rice was newly grown the owners of the fields went to the fields every day to clear the weeds. To keep the weeds from mixing with the rice they pulled out the weeds every day. But when they went back the next day they found that the weeds had grown again. The owners of the field thought, "Oh, we didn't pull all the weeds out cleanly, so they grew back." On that day, they made sure they cleaned all the weeds in the field. But even though they pulled out the weeds every day for weeks the weeds did not disappear. "Hmmm, maybe our neighbors planted the weeds because they were jealous of us." They doubted the neighbors. The owners of the field thought, "Hmmm, this is not good." "Let's stay in the field at night and see what happens." So, one night, they stayed in the field. "What kind of bad, crooked people are planting weeds?" They did not sleep, but kept watch all night by holding their knives. After dark, the owners kept watch. Then, in the middle of the night they heard a sound coming from the outskirts of the jungle. It was too dark to see their faces clearly, but only the sound came. They came out of the jungle by playing the instruments with a clanking sound. They were the jungle spirits. They came out of the jungle with a clanking sound. They sang songs and danced. They sang and danced in the field. How did they sing? "Weeds wake up and grow!" "Golden paddy stays low and sleeps!" The spirits lost all the rice. They made the weeds in the field grow. They planted a lot of weeds. They planted the weeds so that only the weeds would grow again. Though they drove them away, the seeds from the weeds that the jungle spirits had left remained there. No matter how many weeds they cut off, there are always weed seeds mixed in with the rice. These are the weed seeds left behind by the jungle spirits. That's what the old people thought.
