Now I'm going to talk about how Nsu Nat (Spirit of jealousy) came to be. Once upon a time, there were two orphan brothers. The elder brother was not so sharp and smart. The younger brother was smart. But the elder one was warm-hearted and good-natured. The younger brother was smart, but unkind. He was a bit unkind. One day, the younger brother said to his elder brother. "Brother, it's time to sow." "It's time to plant not only rice, but other vegetables as well." "Let's cut the grass and then plant." The elder brother had already finished cutting the grass. But seem like he didn't have any vegetable seeds. So he said to his brother, "What should I grow then?" "I'm done mowing." "I don't have any seeds to plant." Then the younger brother said to his elder brother, "Brother, scrape this old horn of the cow and scatter them on the field." But the younger brother grew vegetables in the field. The elder brother did as he was told and scraped the old cow's horn. And he really scattered them in his field. When it was time for the seeds to sprout, the younger brother asked his brother, "Brother, how about your field?" "Some vegetables are growing gradually in my field." "How about yours?" "My field is growing like bamboo shoots." Surprisingly, there were many cows in the elder brother's field, where he had scattered cow's horns. The elder borther said to his younger brother, "In my field, the cows are mooing." "Mooing" is the sound of cows. When the younger brother heard that, he was so surprised. "What the heck is going on?" He couldn't believe his ears. Then, he went to his brother's field to check. He saw that there were indeed many cows in his brother's field. Not only was he surprised, but he wanted to own all the cows. He wanted to own his brother's cows. So, what did he do? He went home and ground some rice. he softened and ground some rice. And he applied rice powder on herds of cows to make them turn into white. "Brother, all the white herds are mine!" He painted all of his brother's cows white. He painted all the cows so that they were all white. He painted them all white with rice powder but there was a heavy rain that night. Then all the rice powder which he put on the cows was gone. The cows returned to its original color. The rain had washed away all the rice powder that had been applied to the cows. So the next day there were no white cows and he couldn't get any cows. Because of the rain. But he wanted to own those cows. So he thought of a devious plan. He thought to himself, "What should I do?" "Shall I just kill my brother?" Then, he went to his elder brother. And he said to his elder brother, "Brother, my wife is dead." "So, let's go and make a coffin." The elder brother believed him and did not ask any questions. He didn't ask if she was really dead or not. He really went along when he was asked to go and make the coffin. When they hollowed out the wood to make the coffin, the younger brother played a trick. He said to his elder brother, "Brother, you and my wife have similar height and size." "So, to know if this coffin is perfect for my wife, lie down there." Then, he just lay down there without any suspicion. When he lay down, the younger brother did what he had planned all along. As soon as he lay down, the younger brother closed the coffin and tied it with vines. He tied the lid of the coffin with vines. He said, "Stay dead in the coffin," and threw the coffin into the forest and went home. But, his elder brother was able to get out of the coffin safely. It was because his younger brother tied only with vines. After being deceived so many times, the elder brother realized the true nature of his brother. He thought, "Oh, that's the kind of person my brother is," and went home. When he got home, he invited his brother to join him. "Brother, my wife is dead." "Let's go and make a coffin," he said, just like his brother had done. He couldn't say no, because he had done the same thing to his brother. "My wife is gone, let's make a coffin," as he had invited his elder brother to join him, this time, he had no choice but to follow him. Unable to refuse the invitation, the younger brother followed his elder brother. The elder brother prepared thin bamboo splits. When they hollowed out a tree to make a coffin as his brother had done to him, the elder brother said, "Brother, since you and my wife are similar in size, lie down in the coffin." When the younger brother lay down in the coffin, his elder brother did the same as he had been done. The elder brother closed the lid tightly with the bamboo splits he had made. The younger brother couldn't get out of the coffin no matter how hard he tried. And what did the elder brother do? His younger brother misbehaved so much. The elder brother got angry and what did he do? He carried the coffin with his brother in it. To make him feel sorry for himself, the elder brother hung that coffin atop a tall tree above the waterfall, and went home. Then he called a squirrel to go check on his brother. "Go check on him." "Go and see him." "See if he's okay." He just wanted to teach a lesson to his brother. But when he told the squirrel to go and check on him What did the squirrel hear? It misheard, "Cut the rope." The squirrel misheard the instruction. The squirrel misheard the words, "Cut the rope," so it bit through the bamboo splits that were hanging the coffin. When the squirrel cut them, the younger brother who was inside the coffin fell down into the waterfall and died. The spirit of jealousy, called "Nsu Nat," to whom we give pigs and chickens and make offerings is said to have originated from this younger brother who fell into the waterfall and died. Collection title Animated videos of Kachin folktales
Description These materials were produced by Keita Kurabe and members of the Kachin community as part of a community-based collaborative documentation and revitalization project in northern Myanmar. Narration was contributed by Sumlut Gun Mai, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Gumtung Lu Awng, and Jumhpawk Nyein Chan Thu.
