This is about a poor boy who became a king. Once in a village, there was a son in a family. When he was about thirteen years old, the palm readers and fortune-tellers examined his fate. They said, "When this boy becomes sixteen years old, he will marry the princess. He will become a king later." The villagers couldn't believe what they said. They said, "How could that poor boy become the king?" The villagers from other villages heard the news. The news reached the king's ears. The king was surprised to hear the news. He was surprised, too. Then the king changed out of his royal garments and dressed as a simple villager. He went to the boy's house to gather more information. He asked the boy's parents, "Is he the one who will become the king?" They said, "We don't know exactly. That's what other people say. We don't spread that news. Other people say that he will become a king." The king said, "I want that kid. I want to take him to the palace." The boy's parents didn't agree. But the king gave them a lot of money. In the end, the king could take the boy to the palace. He took the boy to the palace. Actually, he didn't want the boy to be the king. He wanted to kill him. He thought, "Such a poor boy will become the king in my country!" He wanted to kill the boy. Then he made a big box and put the boy in it. And he threw it into the water with the intention of drowning the boy. He said, "Drown!" Luckily, the box with the boy inside floated near a ship. The ship owner saw the box and thought, "What is inside?" He was curious. Then he retrieved the box from the water. When he opened it, he saw a boy inside. He asked the boy what had happened. The boy told him everything. The ship owner said, "That's all right. I also need someone to do chores for me. Work here with me. I will take care of you." Then he let the boy stay with him. Meanwhile, the king was traveling across the country. He happened to stay at the ship owner's house as a guest. The boy did every single thing the king needed because the ship owner asked him to. He did every single chore and everything needed for the king. The king remembered the boy and thought, "This is the boy I threw into the water. He is still alive and lives here." He thought like that to himself. He thought of another plan to kill the boy. The king gave money to the ship owner and said, "I want to send a letter to my queen in the palace. Can I ask this boy to deliver it?" The ship owner said, "Okay. Let him deliver the letter and return." In the letter, it said, "Kill the boy who delivers this letter when he reaches the palace." The letter contained that message. Then the king ordered the boy to deliver the letter to the queen. The boy started his journey to the palace. It was a long journey, and by the time he was near the palace, it had become dark, so he spent the night at an old woman's house in a nearby village. The old lady said, "Kid, don't sleep here. This village is really dangerous. There are many robbers and thieves here. Sleep somewhere else to be safe." But it was already dark. So the boy said, "Grandma, it's already dark. It's too late to go to another village now. That will be okay. I will just sleep here." While they were both sleeping, the robbers approached the house and said, "We saw that a guest has arrived here tonight. We want his gold and money. We are here to rob him of his wealth!" The boy was still sleeping and didn't notice when the robbers took his belongings. He put the letter in his bag. The robbers read the letter and found the message that said, "Kill the boy who delivers this letter when he arrives at the palace." They felt pity for the boy and tore up the letter. Instead, they wrote, "When this boy arrives, arrange for him to marry the princess." They changed the message. The boy had no idea what the message said. He just went to the palace and delivered it. After the queen read the message, she believed him because the king had sent him. She held a meeting with the royal officials about the matter. They decided, "It's an order from the king. Let them get married. They arranged the marriage between the boy and the princess. When the king returned to the palace, he saw that the boy he had ordered to kill was living a married life with his daughter. He was really surprised to see him. But he still wanted to kill the boy. The king said to the boy, "There is a jungle nat in my country. The hair of that nat is not ordinary hair; it is gold hair. Pluck three strands of gold hair." The boy didn't know where that nat lived, so he just wandered. Soon, he arrived at a village. The rich people from that village checked the passersby at the village gate. They asked the boy why he came there. He answered, "Nothing serious. I am on my way because the king ordered me to bring three strands of the nat's gold hair." The villagers said, "Okay. Now, the water that all the villagers drink is dry. We don't know the reason. Now, we don't have enough water to drink. We are struggling to get enough water to cook and wash. Can you ask that nat why the water is dry?" The boy said, "Okay. I will ask him about the well and let you know on my way back." And he continued his journey. Soon, he arrived at another village. The villagers asked him the same question as the previous ones had, and he gave the same answer. He told them where he would go. Then the villagers said, "There is a fruit tree in the middle of the village, where the village chief's house is. The tree bears many fruits. Also, the fruits are so tasty. The fruit grows abundantly every year. When the fruit is bearing, they celebrate. But the fruit is no longer bearing. We don't know why the fruit stopped bearing. Please, ask the nat about this matter." The boy said, "Okay. I will ask him about it." They didn't harm him. Soon, he continued his journey. Then, he arrived at the sea. He met a man who worked as a ferryman. The boy explained why he was going and where he was headed. He said to the man that he was looking for the nat. Then the man said, "I have been working as a ferryman for many years, transporting passengers all the time. I still need to work, even though I am now an old man. I don't want to work anymore. What should I do? Who should I pass this work to? Could you please ask the nat? And let me know." The boy said, "Okay. I will ask him and let you know." And he continued his journey. But he lost his way and ended up in a dense forest. He couldn't find a place to sleep, even though it was already dark. He kept walking in the dark. Soon, he saw a light shining from a hut, so he walked toward it. Inside, there was an old lady with grey hair sitting. She asked the boy, "Where are you from? How did you come here? What do you need? Who do you want to meet?" He said, "The king ordered me to pluck three strands of the jungle nat. When I arrived at a village, the villagers said that the water they use and drink is drying up. They want to know why it is drying. When I arrived at another village, I happened to arrive at the chief's house. The tree growing in the middle of that compound used to bear a lot of fruit.
