Description Translation (Gun Mai)
A long time ago, there was a big village which had over 100 households. The people from the village were very active and enthusiastic in whatever they did and also had many abilities. The village was a very hard-working village. But, there was an authoritarian chief in the village. The chief collected taxes from the villagers. Since the chief used to collect a lot of taxes, the villager had insufficient food to eat no matter how much they made efforts. They also were not able to wear good clothes. Moreover, the authoritarian chief also called and kept the most beautiful six girls from the village who were about 17, 18 years old for his pleasure and to abuse them. Among the six girls, the youngest girl was the most beautiful girl. Since she was the youngest girl, the chief could not abuse the girl while he could abuse and used the other five girls for his pleasure, making them his wives. But, he could not abuse the youngest and the most beautiful girl. So, he used to beat and torture the girl. There were also other servants in the chief's house. There was an orphaned boy who was working to look after the chief's cattle. Because the girl and the orphaned boy were living in the chief's house since they were very young, when they were growing up, they were interested in each other and fell in love. The chief had got known about it. The chief knew about it and he got angry very much with them. So, he tried to break the boy and the girl and used many methods but he did not succeed. The boy and the girl even loved more than before. Since the chief could not break them anymore. he drove out the boy from his house. After the boy left, he went to the mountains and lived there by hunting. After he had been living there by hunting for several years, one evening, the girls from the chief house went to the mountains to collect firewoods. The girl who fell in love with the boy was also included. The girl felt lonely and depressed since the day that her boyfriend was driven out by the chief. On the way to collect the firewoods, the girl made Nchyun sounds and continued their journey. At that time, the boy was also hunting in the forest and he heard the Nchyun sounds of the girl. So, he went to the place where the sounds came and he met with the girls. When the girls met the boy, the girl who fell in love with the boy said that "I don't want to return the chief's house. Let me follow you. I will just follow you forever." From that day, the girl and the orphaned boy lived together. They had been hunting and living in the mountains for several years. In one year, they said to do farm. So, they cleared and burnt the weeds and grasses of the farm. Their farm was located next to a big road. When they were doing their farm, the chief passed the boy and the girl's farm including his men, his wives, and children to go to meet his parents-in-law. When the chief was passing the farm, he saw the boy and the girl. And, the chief said to his men to arrest the boy. So, the boy was tied with 9 feets-long rope in a big trunk. The boy was also beaten by the chief's men. When the girl saw that the boy was tied and beaten, the girl fearlessly ran to the boy. At that time, the chief pulled off his sword and killed the girl. He killed the girl and also beat the boy until the boy was almost dead. Then, they left. When they were leaving, a barking deer ran into them. And, the barking deer hit at the shin of the chief. Then, the barking deer ran away and the men including the chief although he was hit, followed the barking deer. When the barking deer got to the mountain, he turned around to the men. When the men followed to catch him, the barking deer ran away again. And, they bent their bodies and followed again. At that time, a man who followed from back accidentally shot the gun and it was hit the chief to death. After the chief dead, his men were carrying his dead body. At that time, the barking deer went to the boy and the girl and sprayed on the girl who already dead with the natural medicine that the barking deer brought and chewed in the mouth. The wounds of the girl were healed immediately and she was alive back. After the girl was alive, the barking also went to the boy and sprayed with the medicine. So, the boy regained consciousness and recovered. From that day, they also lived happily. The story is ended here. It was about the authoritarian chief also dead like that because he was a bad guy.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
