Once upon a time, there was a widow and her son in a village. They were so poor and just worked on the farm. The son grew up and became a handsome young man. He reached the age of getting married. There was a beautiful princess in their country. He fell hard for the princess. He told his mother, "Mom, I want to get married to the princess. Ask her hand for me, please." She told him, "What nonsense, my son! We are so poor that we don't own anything. How can we ask the princess to marry you?" Then he told her, "Don't worry, mom. Just go to the palace and tell the king to give his daughter." She tried to coax him, but she couldn't. So she went to the palace. The king's servants took her to the king. The king asked her, "Why are you here? What's the matter?" Then she politely said, "I'm afraid to say this. My son loves your beautiful daughter. He will die if he can't marry her. I can't let my son die. So I am here to ask formally for the hand of your daughter to marry my son." The king said, "How could you ask for the hand of my daughter?! You don't own anything! Moreover, you are penniless. Anyway, if you want my daughter, you need to bring a buffalo as big as a mountain as brideprice." After hearing what the king said, she was upset. She thought, "He told me that he would agree to let them marry only if we could give him that buffalo. Where can we find that kind of big buffalo?" Then she went back home and said everything to her son. She told him, "The king told me to give the buffalo as big as a mountain so that he would agree to your marriage. Don't even dream of your marriage with the princess. How can we have that kind of buffalo? We don't even have a small buffalo! Just give up." Then he told her, "Don't worry, mom. I will definitely give the buffalo to the king. You don't need to worry, mom. Just tell the king that we will give it." She said, "If you can, then it's fine." The next day, the man took a hammer and an axe and went to the palace. The palace was covered by thick walls. He started cutting and hitting the wooden walls with his hammer and axe. The king's servants asked him, "Why are you cutting and hitting the palace walls?" He answered, "I am about to bring an enormous buffalo to the king. However, the gate is too small for it. That's why I am trying to expand the gate." Then the king's servants told the king, "It is the son of the lady who came to ask for the princess's hand yesterday." The king said, "Take him to me." The servants called the young man and took him to the king. The king asked him, "Why are you destroying my palace gate?" He answered, "You told my mother that I needed to bring a buffalo as big as a mountain if I wanted to get married to the princess. So I am expanding your gate first. The gate is too small for the buffalo. The gate is not wide enough for the buffalo. That's why I am expanding the gate, my king." The king thought, "This man is really intelligent. If I accept him as my son-in-law, my country will be prosperous and developed. He knows how to solve the problems. I will let him marry my daughter." The king agreed to let the man marry his daughter.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
