Title Nat ni kaji dwi hpe hpai ai lam | The old man carried by spirits
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai & Keita Kurabe)
The story I am telling now is about an old man who was carried by the Nat spirits. Long time ago, there were a grandpa and his granddaughter in a village. One day, they went to see their relatives far away. After meeting them, they went back home. They had to walk past the mountains and valleys. They were very tired and had to rest. It was already dark. They had to spend the night on the road. The grandpa said, "My granddaughter, get up early tomorrow and cook breakfast for us." The next morning, he woke his granddaughter up while he was still in bed. When breakfast was ready she told him to get up and eat. "It's cooked. Wake up, grandpa." "Let's eat." He replied, "You eat first." "I'll eat when you're finished." So she ate alone. When she finished it she woke her grandpa up again. But the grandpa said, "I'm not hungry." "After you have finished eating, keep all of the dishes." "Let's leave." After she kept the dishes she said to her grandpa. "I've finished, grandpa." Then the grandpa said, "If you've finished" "Come and open the blanket on my face." She did as her grandpa told her. She removed the blanket covering his face. When she opened it grandpa's eyes were gone. The eyes were hollow. Her grandpa was already dead. Actually, even after he died, he was worried about his granddaughter and spoke to her. So he advised her. "Go back home. Don't look back! Don't even sneak, okay?" "Never look back when anyone calls you." "Go straight home until you reach home." She did as her grandpa told her. She did not look back. She carried all the things and went back home. On her way back home, she heard the noise of many people following behind her. But she did not look back. She knew that if she looked back, she would die. She arrived near the village and entered the village. When she reached the front of her house she thought, "It's very noisy behind me, what are they talking about?" Then she sneaked a peek. At that time, the Nat spirits carrying her grandpa's dead body threw his body in front of the house and all of them disappeared. This is how people in the past told the story of the old man who was carried by the Nat spirits. Thank you very much.
