Title Masu chye ai num kasha (The Lying Girl) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
I will tell you about a girl who lied. Once upon a time, there was an ugly girl in a palace. She was really good at lying. One day, the king heard about her. So he called her to the palace and said, "You are good at lying, right? How do you lie to people?" She said, "Yes. I am good at lying." The king said, "You are a liar! You shouldn't live here!" He drove her out of the village and sent her to the forest. One day, she was wandering in the forest and arrived at the place where an old farmer and his wife lived after crossing a mountain. The old couple earned a lot of money after selling the wood. The liar saw the old woman counting money and said, "Grandma, please let me stay here. I don't have any relatives to rely on. Please help me." The old lady felt pity for her and said, "Okay, you can stay here with us. You can work and live together with us." When the old man got back home in the evening, he also agreed to let the girl stay with them. The old lady always brought her husband his lunch in person. One day, she asked the girl to send the lunch box to him. Then the liar girl took the lunch box and went on her way. There was an old well along the path. She left the lunch there and went back to the old lady. She said, "Grandma, Grandpa fell into the well on the way. He slipped in when I handed him the lunch box. Bring a long rope and let's go quickly!" When they arrived, the old lady was crying and upset. As she bent over to look into the well, the liar girl pushed her in. The old lady didn't even have a chance to call for help. She died there. Meanwhile, the old man wondered why his wife hadn't come to bring him lunch yet. When he walked back home, he saw the girl push his wife into the well. He was shocked and thought, "How could she do this to us? We gave her food and a place to sleep, but she is not grateful and did something like this?" Then he took out his knife and killed her.

Masu chye ai num kasha a lam tsun na re. Moi shawng e da hkawhkam wang langai kaw myi man kyip kyip rai na machyip marut rai na grai ntsawm ai num nga ai da. Grai masu sha ai da, dai wa gaw grai chye masu sha ai dai hpe she hkawhkam wa na kau ai da. Rai na hkawhkam wa shaga sai da. Shaga rai shaloi she, nang grai chye masu ai i, gara hku masu ai hpa law nya law ngu dai hku tsun na, kaja ngai grai chye masu ai ngu tsun ai da. Dai hku hkam la ai da, dai shaloi she hkawhkam wa gaw nang na ram chye masu ai gaw ngu na hkawhkam wang kaw gawt kau ai da, shi hpe mare de nmai nga na hku nam de sha nga na hku gawt kau ai da. Dai shaloi she, lani mi na ten hta shi dai hku dam hkawm mat wa shaloi she nam maling langai mi lai ai hpang she ding gai yan dingla hkau na galaw sha na nga ai dinggai yan dingla kaw sa mu ai da. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of a community-based collaborative fieldwork project in northern Myanmar. As of October 26, 2025, the collection includes 2,491 stories, 2,491 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,695 translations.


Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Translations were prepared by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
