Title Woi ni masha kaw bung lat sa hpyi ai lam (Monkeys who came to ask for fine) with English translation
Description Translation (Seng Pan)
The story I am going to tell you now is about the monkeys asking compensation from a man. Once upon a time, a man did shifting cultivation for living. A very old monkey always came and stole the crop from his field. So, he thought of a way to murder the old monkey. Soon, he made a trap and killed him. Many of the old monkey's fellows planned to come and ask for compensation from him. The man also did some preparations, like breaking big sticks and wooden chairs. He also called some sand-flies and he was waiting for the monkeys at home. When the monkeys arrived at his home, he let them sit first. After that, the man called the sand-flies and blew to the monkeys. Then the flies bit on their faces. So, they picked up the sticks that were broken by the man. And they struck at their faces with those sticks in order to kill the sand-flies. From that, it changed into hitting each other. They fixed date to come back. And they all went back. They also told him that they would come back again, On that day, the man kindled a big fire and burnt some big stones. When the monkeys came to him, he took a stone for each. As they sit on the stones, their bottoms were burnt. So, they run away again. And they also couldn't ask for compensation. From that time on, the monkeys' bottoms what the people call monkey's stool are still hairless since they sat on the man's hot stones.

Ngai hkai na maumwi gaw moi woi ni shinggyin masha ni kaw bunglat sa hpyi la ai lam re nga ai. Moi da ndai la langai mi gaw yi galaw nam kaw yi galaw ai da. Yi galaw she ndai grai dingla sai woi dingla langai mi gaw shani shagu mam chyu lagu sha ai da. Sa lagu sha jang she la dai mung nyan sai hku re nga. Nyan na she woi dingla dai e sat kau ya sai da. Sat kau ya jang she dai woi ni gaw law law yan sa na she shi kaw bung lat sa hypi ai da. Bunglat sa hpyi na hkyen she la dai gaw kaning di ai i nga yang she lahkum ni law law daw tawn re na ndai naya bai daw na la taw sai da. La nga na she la ya ma daw tawn she mati mayan kasha ni e ma saw tawn re sai da. Saw tawn re yang she saw tawn na la taw sai da. La nga she kaja wa woi ni yan sa wa yang she dai kaw dung mi dai kaw dung mu, ngu dung shangun na ndai machyi mayan ni e shaga la na gawut bun dat sai da. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
