Description Translation (Htoi San)
In ancient times, Kachin people had to give a bride to a bride-taking clam if the elders agreed to be married even though the bride and bridegroom did not want to. A long time ago, a girl did not want to marry a man she did not desire, although her parents, relatives, and advisors wanted her to. She was too sad and said to her mother. "My mother, I don't like to marry, but you are pushing me. So today, I don't want to stay in this world. I don't want to be alive in this world." She told her mother to listen, "If you want to meet me, you come up to the giant rock and skirt on the flat rock and see me on an overhanging rock." "Mom, I will cling to the overhanging rock and live there today." She cried and said to her mother sadly. Then she jumped off and died from that cliff. At the overhanging rock where she jumped off and died, many types of flowers grew. Good-smelling orchid flowers, sweet-scented kaempferia flowers, and many species of balsam flowers beautifully grew at that place because of the spirits of that girl. So the mother followed what her daughter informed her and went up to the overhanging rock. When she saw many attractive and nice-smelling flowers flapping there, she cried as she remembered what her daughter said before. In ancient times, older women from the mountainous place carried rice packs and malted rice liquid and went up the overhanging rock. Then they picked orchids and flowers like listening to that girl's words, and they visited and enjoyed being there. Many kinds of sweet-scented and pretty flowers growing on top of the flat rock are due to that girl.

Nu e nanhte ngai nwa ra ai ngu tim wa wa chyu nga gaw ngai gaw dai ni gaw nye a asak ndai mungkan ga e gaw n kam nga sai, mungkan ga ngai n kam hkrung nga sai. Dai re majaw gaw kanu e madat tsun da ai, nu nang ngai n sha e hkrum mayu jang gaw aw lungdu ntsa de lunghpra ntsa de sa garet sa mada u ngu, n htawn ntsa e she sa yu nu yaw. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
