Title Hkawngrang u hte hkawng ma u (The hornbill and the Spot-breasted Woodpecker) with English translation
Description Translation (Seng Pan)
The story I am going to tell you now is about a Great hornbill and a Spot-breasted Woodpecker. A long time ago, the mother Great hornbill brooded and the father Great hornbill looked for the food for his wife and children. But he couldn't do it alone for a long time. So, he asked help from the Spot-breasted Woodpecker. He said, "My friend, Spot-breasted woodpecker, help me in looking for the food for my family! When my daughters become old enough, you can get marry with one of them." So, the Spot-breasted woodpecker also helped him in finding food. Soon, the Great hornbill chicks were full-fledged and became as beautiful as the mother Great hornbill. When the chicks were completely developed, the father Great hornbill fetched the Spot-breasted woodpecker and said, "The Spot-breasted woodpecker, as I promised you before, now you can choose anyone you like. My daughters are all full-fledged." So, the Spot-breasted woodpecker chose one of them. But unluckily, the one he picked was the mother Great hornbill since the daughters were as beautiful as the mother and they all looked the same. Therefore, the Spot-breasted woodpecker made the wrong choice. Then the father, Great hornbill said, "That's my wife." The Spot-breasted Woodpecker felt embarrassed and made a sound, "oak oak!". Immediately, he ran away. In the forest today, the bird, Spot-breasted woodpecker, walks by making a sound, "oak oak!".
