Title Majoi lu ai rai n mai la ai (Old woman and rooster) with English translation
Description Translation (Seng Pan)
This story tells us it's not good to take things for free. A long time ago, an old couple lived in a village by doing shifting fields for a living. There also was a lazy rooster. It spent years carelessly. The rooster saw the old couple were working in the shifting field. And every day, it crouched in a big tree which was passed by the old couple when they went to their field. As days went by, it came the time to harvest the rice. On a day, the old couple went to the field and harvested the rice. After it, the old lady returned home by carrying some rice in her backpack. When the rooster saw her, it thought that the old lady would pick it up and put it in her basket with a tumpline if it pretended to be dead. So, the rooster pretended to be dead by lying on the path, the old couple would come. The old lady saw the rooster and said to herself, "Who shot this rooster? It seems we could have a good curry tonight." She was full of happiness and took the rooster. She put it into the basket on her back. There was some rice in the basket. Then the foxy rooster made himself alive from pretending dead. And it started eating the rice in the basket till it felt so full. Moreover, the rooster also made the rice fell to the ground with its beak. When the old lady had nearly arrived at her house, the rooster suddenly flapped and jumped out of the basket. Then the old lady noticed that the rooster she took fled away, and the rooster deceived her. So, she put down her basket, and she found the rooster was not in it. Therefore, the old lady thought that the things without cost should not be taken for free. She regretted and realized that the gratis things would be useless.
