Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, there was a group of foxes. They always shared what they hunted with each other. One day, they hunted for food the whole day, but they couldn't catch anything. At night, they planned to sleep beneath a big tree. They hadn't eaten anything the whole day. Then, one of the foxes secretly left his group and went to the village to look for some food. He went there to catch animals like pigs or chickens to eat. The villagers had set a metal trap to catch the fox in case it entered the village. Unluckily, the fox got his tail caught in it. He tried to pull his tail out of the trap, but he couldn't. It was almost morning, but he still couldn't pull his tail out of the trap. He felt both disappointed and afraid. He was worried that the villagers would kill him if they saw him. So he pulled with all his strength. At last, his tail was torn off from the root. He went back to his group without his tail. Now his tail was short. When morning came, his friends saw that he had a very short tail. They laughed at him and said, "Where did you leave your tail? Did you forget it somewhere?" He was embarrassed, but he didn't show it at all. Then he said to his friends, "Listen to me. Listen if what I say is true. Our tails don't look good. Also, we can't run fast because of them. And our tails get stuck when we run through the bushes. We might get hurt too. We couldn't catch anything when we hunted because of our tails." Then the leader of the foxes told him, "Let's see if what you said is true. You will race against a fox that still has a tail. If you win, what you said is true. If you lose, what you said is wrong." But the fox with the short tail lost by a little. The fox with the long tail was faster. Then the other foxes said to him, "When we said you have a short tail, you told us that what you have is the best and that having a long tail is bad. But look what happened! When we checked if what you said was true, we found out that what you said was just a lie. If you hadn't lied to us, we could still share food with you, even if you are slow. But now, since you lied, we cannot share our food with you." He was so embarrassed that he left his group. He searched for his own food and lived alone.
