Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, there was a fisherman in a village. He cast the fishing net four times a day. He never cast the net more than four times. One day, he went fishing in a lake. When he cast the net for the first time, he got a clay pot. He thought it would be a big fish. But, it was just a pot. Then, he thought to himself again, "It will be a gold pot." But it turned out that it was just a clay pot. There was only mud and sand inside it. He threw the pot into the lake and thought to cast the fishing net again. But this time, he got the pieces of glass and plastics. He said to himself, "I cast the fishing net only four times a day. I've already cast the net two times. I will throw the net one more time. I hope I will get some fish." This time, he got a big rock. He was disappointed. But he comforted himself, "No matter I get some fish or not, I will cast the fishing net for the last time." Then, he got another big pot. He thought, "I think I get a gold pot this time. I will sell it." Before he sold it, he wanted to open it. At that time, something like smoke was coming out when he opened the lid. The smoke became a ghoul. The ghoul said, "I will kill you." The man apologized to the demon not to kill him. The demon said, "At first, I thought I would not kill you. The king locked me in this pot because I killed many people. I have been in it for two hundred years. I had waited for someone who could save me for twenty years. I thought to make him wealthy. But no one saved me. So, I waited for the second time. I decided to give every treasure from the ground to the second saviour. But, no one came to save me. So, I have made up my mind. I will kill the man who saves me in this time. Then, you saved me! So, I am going to kill you." The man knew that the demon was going to kill him. He kept thinking of an idea to escape from the devil. Then, he told the monster, "I don't believe how a giant ghoul like you could be in this tiny pot!" The ghoul said, "You think I lie to you? Okay, I will show you. I will enter the pot." The demon turned into the smoke and entered the pot. At that time, the man quickly closed the pot with the lid. The demon was crying and apologized to the man to set him free. The devil said, "I will make you be a wealthy man. I promise you. Please, set me free. I will not live in your country too. I will go back to my place. I will not kill you." Then, the man felt pity for him and opened the lid. The demon put the man in his hand and took him to a lake. When they reached there, the ghoul sai, "You will be rich by fishing in this lake. But, you can only cast the fishing net once a day. Remember what I say. Don't throw the net three or four times a day. You can throw one time for today. Throw your net." When he cast the net, he got a lot of fish. He got countless fish. The demon asked him, "Can you make a promise that you will fish only one time a day?" He made a promise to the ghoul, "I promise I will cast the net only one time a day. Go back to your country. Don't live here." In the end, the ghoul went back to his country and never appeared again. The man cast the fishing net only one time a day. He got a lot of fish and sold them at the market. In that way, he became rich.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
