Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story is about an orphan boy and the bullies (a group of brothers). Once upon a time, there were bullies in the village. They were seven brothers. There was a poor grandmother and her grandson in that village too. The seven brothers always wanted to bully the orphan boy since he was poor. But the orphan boy wasn't afraid of them at all. He was brave enough to protect himself from getting bullied. One day, the bullies said, "Hey! My friend, let's go catch some birds." The orphan boy agreed to go catch the birds with them. When they set the traps on the banyan trees, the orphan couldn't set a trap on it because he couldn't climb the tree. While the seven brothers were setting their traps on the tree, the orphan set his trap on the ground. After they had set the traps, they all went back home. The next morning, they didn't call the orphan boy to check the traps and went there first before the orphan boy did. They found that there caught a barking deer in the orphan's trap. They took that deer off from the trap and hooked it in their trap. Then, they went back and called him to go check the traps which they set yesterday. When they reached there, the orphan boy saw that there was a great hornbill in his trap and a barking deer in one of the brothers' traps. Then, he said, "My friends, deer inhabits on the ground, not on the tree. Why is it on the tree!? And great hornbills are birds. They live on trees. How could it get caught in the trap which was set on the ground? You changed them! You guys are bullying me." They denied, "No! You see that there caught a deer in our trap. You got a great hornbill. Let's take them and go home!" Then, the orphan boy said, "No! I can't accept it. I will call some elders from the village. Wait for me here." He invited a rabbit to make the right decision for him. The rabbit said, "Hey! The banana trunks are used in building a fire, and the sand is on fire. Have you ever heard or seen it before?" Then, the brothers said, "No way! We haven't heard or seen it before. It's impossible! How could it be? You are lying. Just go back!" The rabbit kept saying, "The banana trunks are used in making fire. The tiger burnt the sand. Don't you see it?" After saying that, it went back to its place. When the rabbit was about to go back, the orphan said, "Wait a minute. I want to give a present to you because you judged us fairly. Take one deer's leg, please. Let me go get it." The rabbit said, "No need to give me. It's all yours. The great hornbill will be theirs. You take the deer and the boys take the hornbill." Then it went back to its place. The seven brothers didn't want to accept its decision, but they didn't deny it anymore. They took the hornbill and went back home too. The orphan boy called all the villagers and gave some meat to each of them. Since then, we have culture called 'shan numju'. ('numju' means distributing a piece of meat to each house.) The moral of this story is that we shouldn't look down and bully others.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
