Description Translation (Seng Pan)
This story is about an orphan, Senglawt. Once upon a time, an orphan and his grandmother lived in a village. Their neighbor was Lalawma (the name is given when the family has many sons). The orphan and the boys from his neighbors, Lalawma, went to a forest to clear the bushes. The boys happily cleared the bushes by teasing each other. The bush where the boys were cutting was not so thick. The part where the orphan was clearing was a dense forest. And it was quite tiring for him to do alone. However, he tried his best. When the orphan cut the bushes in full strength, he found a shimmering jade. But the boys didn't know that the orphan got a jade. They only attempted to bully him. "Hey, my friend! You are an orphan. So, you clear the dense forest," the boys said. Since he was a kind-hearted boy, he didn't complain and cleared the bushes as they said. Fortunately, he found a jade. It was glittering. The orphan was so happy and put his arms around the jade. At that time, the boy prepared to go back home after cutting the bushes in their part. The orphan pretended he got a stomach ache. So, the boys asked, "My friend. How are you? Have you got a headache?" "My stomach is very painful," the orphan replied. As the boys were heartless, they didn't give him medical care. "Please inform my grandmother. It's so painful," the orphan said. When the boys arrived back home, they said, "Grandma. Your grandson is lying on the road since he has got a stomach ache." As soon as the grandmother heard it, she ran to the forest. She also brought a bag. When she found her grandson, he showed the glittering jade and said, "Grandma. This is a valuable jade. Put this in your bag, and let's go back home." The grandmother and the orphan walked back home. The orphan's neighbors, the boys, planned to go to the hereditary chief and sell the things. They also asked the grandmother and the orphan to join with them. The orphan joined with them. The boys brought the things like pigs, chickens to sell. "May I go with you?" the orphan requested the boys. "The orphan like you don't have anything. What things do you have for sale? You must not go because you have nothing for sale," the boys replied. And they went to the heredity chief's place by carrying their livestock. They sold them in the heredity chief's house and bought the things that they needed. However, the orphan followed after them quietly. He arrived at a village near the heredity chief's place. He stayed a night at an old widow's house. And he begged her, "Aunt. Please bring me to the heredity chief's house!" The old widow replied, "Why should I bring the orphan like you there? I will feel belittled because of you." But the orphan didn't give up easily. He asked her again and again. Even though the old widow said mean things to the orphan, he kept asking her. So, the widow brought him to the heredity chief's house at last. He brought the jade with him. When they arrived at the heredity chief's house, the orphan said, "My lord. I've brought a thing for sale." "Let me have a look, my dear," the chief said. The orphan took out his glittering jade. Because of its sparkle, the heredity chief and his servants became blind. They couldn't see even the orphan in front of them. "It's burning!" they shouted. "My lord. It's on fire. Let's get out of this place!" the servants shouted. They thought the sparkle from the jade was fire, so they fetched the water and planned to pour it on the orphan. Before the servants poured the water, the orphan kept the jade in his bag. Then, the heredity chief said, "My brother. Your jade is priceless. What's the price? How much do you want?" Since the orphan was uneducated and poor, he didn't know how to count the money. Therefore, he just scratched his head when the chief asked how much he wanted for it. "How much do you want?" the chief asked, but he just touched his head. So, the heredity chief let his servants count the orphan's hair one by one. And he bought the jade with the amount of money which was as much as the orphan's hair. So, the orphan became a wealthy man, although he was not as rich as the heredity chief. When he went back home, many servants followed after him. He wore a nice dress, rode a horse, and went back to the village where his grandmother was. When he arrived at the entrance of the village, many villagers came to see him, including his neighbors, the boys. "He looks like my grandson. Is it him?" the grandmother mumbled. "How could he be your poor grandson? He is an orphan. It's totally impossible," the boys mocked the grandmother. "If he is your grandson, we will work as your slave for the rest of our life," they said and gave the promise to the grandmother. The boy they were curious about walked straight to the grandmother, and they found out that he was the poor orphan. As the boys promised the grandmother, they had to work in the orphan's house for their whole life.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
