Long long ago, there was a man who had the power to bewitch human beings. He was very handsome. But, no girl in the village loved him because he has the power to bewitch human beings. No parents in the village also wanted to marry him with their daughter. Although the man asked the girls to marry many times, no one wanted the man to marry their daughters. One day, the man went to a village, which needed to cross a river. He saw a very beautiful girl and asked her to marry. The parents of the girl agreed with the man to marry their daughter. The man asked the parents that "Don't you need to ask your daughter?" "No need to ask. If we, her parents agreed, you can marry," answered the father of the daughter. The parents of the girls thought to themselves that "If we don't allow him to marry our daughter, he will use his power to bewitch our daughter and kill her. And, he will also kill us. So, we have to agree him to marry our daughter." The man married the girl and returned to the man's village. After three days, the girl was thinking to kill the man as she always wanted to kill him because she did not love him. So, the girl said to the man that "Let's go to my parents." It was on the third day after they married. They had to cross the river with a raft. "Yes, let's go," the man said. When they got to the river, the girl said to the man that "You ride on the raft first. I will cut the string and follow to ride the raft." Then, the girl pushed the raft to the deeper part of the river and said that "I will go and cut the string." And, she cut the string of the raft and the man was floated on the raft to the deeper part of the river. At that time, the man asked the girl that "Why did you do to me like this?" "I cannot love you such a man who has the power to bewitch. That's why I just made you float away." So, the man thought to himself that "I will come back and kill you one day." "The day I can come out from the river, I will kill you," the man thought to himself. The man was floated throughout the river and reached the ocean. It had been almost twenty years and the man was very hungry. At that time, three fishermen heard the voice of the man. The man even could not open his eyes. The man was very weak and just lay down on the raft. The three fishermen said that "Over there, it seems a man is lying down on the raft. Let's go and see." "His eyes are closed and I think he is going to die. It would be better not to bring him home otherwise it would be a waste of money to treat him." "Let's just put down into the water." The man was talking that "Please save me. Don't put me into the water," but no one could hear him. So, the three fishermen put him into the river. After they put the man into the river, a dragon pitied a lot of the man. So, the dragon saved the man and the man stayed with the dragon for about twenty years. The man who had the power to bewitch stayed with the dragon for twenty years and one day, he said to the dragon that "King Dragon, I want to return to my village where my wife is living." "What do you want to do there?" the dragon asked. "I will go and kill my wife," answered the man. "Why will you kill?" the dragon asked again. "Because she put me into the river so I was in such troubles. That's why I will go and kill her. I am angry," the man answered. "Yes, I will allow you to return home. But, don't kill your wife. May be she might also be in trouble because of you. So, don't return anymore," the dragon said. It had been forty years. The time on the raft was for twenty years and the time that the man stayed with the dragon was for twenty years. So, It had been forty years. After the dragon said so, the man said that "OK, I promise that I won't kill a human. Please just send me the place where I was put on the raft." When the dragon sent the man to the place where he was put on the raft, the man saw that a very old woman who had long white hair was standing. The man thought to himself that "Since it has been very long, may be I don't recognize the old woman. I will go and ask her." Because the man had the power to bewitch human beings, he was not getting old and just like a young man. So, the man called the woman and the woman turned to the man. The man just knew that the woman was his wife. The woman also just recognized that the man was her husband. The woman was shocked and said that "I was very wrong." "Why you are standing here even until the white hair?" the man asked. The woman then said that "After I put you on the raft, I returned home but my parent also did not accept me anymore as they were afraid of me because they thought that I also have the power to bewitch human beings because I lived with you. Not only my parents but also the whole villagers drove me out of the village. So, I am just living here for forty years Although the man planned to kill his wife before, because he pitied a lot of his wife, with the gold that was given by the dragon, they just built a bit house there and lived happily.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
