Description Translation (Gun Mai)
Long long ago in a villager, there were two families; one family opened a gold shop and one family sold vegetables. The family that sold vegetables lived happily. And, the family that opened the gold shop was rich but they were involved in bad activities such as gambling. A son of the family that sold vegetables and a son of the family that opened the gold shop were very friendly. So, they discussed and went to sell clothes and they got to a road intersection. When they got to the intersection, the son of the family that sold vegetables went the right way. The son of the family that opened the gold shop went to the left way. They told each other that "Let's just meet here again after we finish trading. You also sell your clothes quickly. Don't stay until it gets dark." "Yes, OK." Then, they left respectively to their way. When they got to the villages, they could sell a lot of clothes. The son of the family that sold vegetables saved money that he got from selling clothes. He kept his cloth pocket and brought it back. But, the son of the family that opened the gold shop just spent the money that he got from selling clothes to drink alcohol because they saw other people were also drinking at a bar on the way to return home. When people invited him to play gambling, he also spent his money on gambling. The money was almost running out. But, he continued to drink and play gambling so spent all the money including both the capital and also profits. He got amazed then. After he spent all money, as it was also getting dark, he immediately remembered that "Oh... I promised my friend to meet with him at the intersection." So, he returned to the intersection that they told each other to meet again. His friend had been waiting there and asked him that "Can you sell your clothes today?" The son of the family that opened the gold shop answered that "Yes, I could sell all the clothes but I spent all the money for alcohol and gambling. So, I have nothing left both capital and profits." The other friend then said that "I did not spend anywhere. I even did not eat food on the way and just saved it. You should not do again like that. We two went to sell the same clothes but I got back my capital while you left nothing so I am unhappy. Don't do like that again. OK?" The other friend who spent money on alcohol said that "Yes, I won't do like that again." In the village, the couple who sold vegetables did good things so they even opened a gold shop later. They also got a good house. The couple who opened the gold shop even lost their gold shop and also the capital. They also had to sell their house so they even did not have a house to stay. At that time, their children who went to sell clothes returned home and they also talked to each other about how things went wrong. The couple who opened the gold shop previously also regretted what they did wrong. Therefore, the family who sold vegetables pitied the other family so they shared their half compound and then, they lived happily.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
