Description Translation (Gun Mai)
Long long ago in a village, there was a widowed family who was very poor. The widow had two sons. They were very poor and their livelihood activities were not regular. One night, a traveller arrived at the widowed family's home and stayed for the night. The traveller saw that the widow's family was very poor so the traveller gave advice. "Home owner, your family looks quite difficult and very poor. There is a very rich and big village in the east, which has a variety of seeds. Go to the village and find and buy the seeds. Then, plant the seeds so you will get rich," suggested the traveller. Then, the traveller continued his journey in the next early morning. The two sons were truly interested in what the traveller suggested to them. So, the two sons and their mother discussed and the two sons went to the east to find the seeds. Even though the two sons hadn't been, they kept walking and after they walked for seven days, they reached the village. People were trading the seeds and some seeds were spilled on the ground. The two boys picked the seeds that were spilled. Then, they put the seeds into the bag that they brought and they could collect half of a bag. And, they also bought some more seeds with the money they brought until the bag was filled and then, they returned. When they were returning home, as it was getting dark on their way, one night, they entered into a house in a village to sleep for the night. The house that they entered was a family that had no children, only a man, and his wife. The two boys respected said and requested to the man and his wife that "Hi uncle and aunt, we two are siblings who are travelling. Because it is getting dark, we came to you to sleep for the night." Then, the man's wife said that "Although you are planning to sleep, we don't have any food to serve you, and also we don't have any blanket to sleep." But, the house owner man said again that "I think it is no problem. We can eat together what we have. Although there is no blanket, we can use the fireplace and skip only one night." So, they accepted the two boys to sleep for the night. At night, because there was no blanket, the two boys also made warm themselves in the fireplace and then slept. When they were sleeping, at midnight, the younger brother got sick. He got sick and suffered a lot. The elder brother did not know what to do so just massaged his brother until the next morning. In the morning, the younger brother who got sick said to his elder brother that "Dear elder brother, you carry these seeds and return home ahead. Our mother might be tired of waiting." The elder brother did not want to leave his younger brother so he said to the younger brother that "Younger brother, it is not OK. If it is to stay, we two stay together. If it is to return, we two return together." So, they discussed a solution and they decided to leave their seeds at the couple's house and to return home because the younger brother was sick and they could not carry the seed bag. They would come and take again their seed bag when the younger brother was recovered. Then, they said to the house owner that "Uncle and aunt, we want to leave our bag here because my younger brother was sick. So, we will just return home without the bag and we will come back and take our bag when my younger brother is recovered." "What is inside in your bag?" asked the man. The boys said that "It is dried fish." Then, they left the bag and returned home. They took a rest at their home and when the younger brother was recovered, they came back again to the couple's house. When they got to the home, they said that "Uncle and aunt, we came here to take back our rice bag." "What the rice bag? Which bag that you left to whom are you asking? You two did not leave the rice bag," said the man. "The left you a bag with full," said the boys. Then, the man said that "You said that the bag you left was dried fish. Here is your bag." So, when the two boys opened the bag, it was the dried fish inside the bag. In fact, the couple replaced the rice seeds bag with the dried fish because the two boys used 'dried fish' as a secret word. So, the two siblings said that "No, our bag was with rice, Uncle and aunt." But, the couple kept denying that "No, you left dried fish." Therefore, they had been arguing but no one won. So, the two siblings boys thought and said that "We won't be finished like this," so they asked a gentleman to resolve the argument between them. So, the gentleman listened well to both sides. He also asked the couple as well as the two boys. And, the gentleman said that "Today I don't free to solve your argument. You all come to my house tomorrow morning. I will just resolve tomorrow." Then, he left. On the next morning, they all went to the gentleman's house. The gentleman prepared good foods and served them first. So, the two boys were unhappy and said to each other that "The gentleman seems not ready to solve their argument and he just serving the food to us." The two boys worried that they won't get back their bag so they were unhappy and just ate a little food. But, the couple ate a lot of food as they hadn't eaten before. They ate a lot of food happily. After they all ate, the gentleman said that "Since I have to solve your argument, let me ask that can you please send these two drums to my house on the plateau over there? I will discuss about your argument after you send the drums." So, the two boys quickly carried the drum because they thought that if they sent quickly it and they would get back their bag quickly. They shared to carry the drum and went to the house. The way to the house was quite steep and also quite far. Because the way was steep and far, the two boys got tired and took a rest When they were taking a rest, the younger brother said that "Elder brother, we will not happen like this if I did not get sick." "It is OK. The house owner couple was dishonest," said the elder brother. The younger brother said again that "Yes, it would be OK even if they left half of the bag but they took all our rice and filled it with the dried fish. They are also quite greedy." "But, I hope that the gentleman will decide rightfully," said the elder brother. Just after the two boys left for a while, the couple also carried the drum and went to the house very unwillingly. They also took a rest in the place where the two boys also took a rest. And, the man and the wife argued between them. "If you did not steal the rice seed of the two boys, I won't need to get tired like this," said the wife. The man said that "Don't talk, don't talk. Others will hear us. The rice seeds that we stole are very good. If we grow the seeds, we will be rich." Then, they continued to carry the drum and sent it to the house. At that time, the gentleman followed them to the house. Then, the gentleman opened the drums that they carried and sent. Two persons came out from each drum. The two persons also hold a book and a pen. The gentleman asked the two persons to listen secretly about what they talked to each other. The gentleman said to the two persons that they have finished their jobs, and then, he said to the couple that "Since you two said with your mouth about you stole the rice seeds of the two boys, go and take quickly their rice seeds." Then, he also said to the two boys that "You two are good and honest boys. Take your rice seed bag and return home," and the gentleman finished their argument. The story is ended here. This story teaches us that we should not be greedy and dishonest.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
